Thanks Russ, for turning me on to Archer. thats an interesting product, i think the N scale rivets might come in handy in future.
For this task, however, the concentric tube construction allowed for the louvers to be cut loose and by gently bending, they can be posed in the open position -

this is quite satisfactory.


buiilding and mounting the engines was the only "technical" challenge to this kit I think.

I'm almost ready to start painting.

Oh.... you mean the cowl flaps! I thought you meant some cooling lovers on the nacelles! I've used Archer rivets and louvers now in several projects-- and I cut the louvers in half or in quarters for 1/72 or 1/144 scale-- they do a good job of simulating raised cooling louvers-- I believe they were intended for 1/35 scale vehicles, but they work just as well for Aircraft.

I went ahead and built the metal props. It took hours, but they do look good. also wing floats on. almost ready for paint.

also an LCM in the same scale. After the war these were distributed widely to the islanders all over the Pacific and many are still in use.
I am contemplating a water diorama.

Still boatloads of work to do. gloss coat and decals, design and print decals for the cockpit windows, fill all the portholes with Klear, drill holes on the roof and mount the astro-dome, and the variety of antenae, etc.

I started this kit on July 1st. I am jogging forward now, hoping to finish it before the end of the month!

Wow Jonathan, great work! A diorama sounds like fun (to watch). I've taken a couple of months off from modeling. I really need to start up again.

Jonathan: The Mars looks really great!

Last weekend I found some time to color up my Wal.

Starting with a white primer and some black pre-shading.

Then the main color was sprayed. I did not like the kits color suggestion of RLM02. Dornier has built up a new Wal (2053 Grönland Wal) and they used a brighter grey. I tried to capture this color.

Decals went on pretty well. And subsequently the upper surface was post shaded with some diluted black and the lower surfaces with diluted brown.



Next will be the engine and props!

Meanwhile, my Wal has been finished.

I oversprayed the entire upper surface with the the diluted base color as a filter to reduce the shading effects. Than, I put on several spots with oils (white, flesh, and blue)

These spots were rubbed with a clean brush onto the surface until only a small shade remained. I tried to photograph it, but the shades are too subtle for it.

So here is the finished Wal of HUMA in 1/72 scale. Hope You like it.






Probably I will try some diorama with water, but I have not done this before.

Before lifting the pictures to the gallery, I will try to set the flying boat to its natural element.

First into the blue:

Next stop is silicon valley. I formed the waves with an old tea spoon. The tips of the waves were drybushed with flat White. Then the shape of the Wal was cut out.


Test fitting of the Wal reveals the gaps that have to be filled with silicon again. For this, the lower side of the Wal was masked to proctect it against the silicon. Fine lines of silicon were pressed to the old water surface and the lower side of the Wal to fit it tightly in. With a small tooth pick the waves of these new silicon lines were shaped.


Water seems a bit rough. So I will have to moor the Wal. More to
come.

A freind of mine has given me some hope on my keeping some of the built a/c or armor. He has a really neat wood working shop and will make or let me make some individual cases to fit the models.

My Dornier's interior is primed a bit. Now waiting for the Vallejo Air RLM colors to arrive. Essentially all that would be needed for this kit: 65+72/73 for the exterior, 22 and 66 for the interior. Should arrive soon. I'll shoot some pictures then

The painting of the figures isn't as great as i remember i could. When i was younger i used to paint these freehand, without glasses and i remember them looking great. I'm sure part of it is worse eyesight, less steady hands and the fact that in memory everything looks better than it actually was

I'm afraid I've had to drop out of the campaign, because I've just so little time for modelling at the moment. I wasted a while scratchbuilding and moulding sets of resin parts for new passenger seats for my Grumman and they do look rather fun - but that, coupled with demands of work at Oxfam, mean I'm a month or more behind where I'd hoped to be with the build, so I'm clearly not going to be able to finish in time while making good on the review items that still keep piling in despite my having "resigned".

I hope to finish the Grumman in due course, but it will have to go on hold for the foreseeable future.
