I have been researching to see if this model PBY had the black deicer boots on the wing, but I have found no concrete info. Some 3 views show the boot some do not.

Paul: This one is really a flawless boaty! Congrats to this one. I especially like the red finish. I find it very hard to make a flawless gloss coat. Everytime I start one, I find some spots onto the surface. But Yours looks really great!

Tim: Outstanding! This one is really cute! The frame painting of the side blisters in this scale is awesome. Not braille scale, even nano scale. Congrats!

Bob: Nice progress on Your Catalina. Concerning the deicer boots I will check my reference.

The Revell kit that I have was probably done on old molds, so it has warps, flash, and fit problems

Hello Bob,
just checked my reference. I think it depends on the serial number. I found this quotation:
"On PBY-5 airplanes prior to serial number. 08349, a rubber boot de-icer system was in- stalled. In these planes , detach Arens control from lever arm of distributing valve by remov- ing clevis bolt from arm at leading edge."

This will be useful, too. Look at page 19 at the note:

I am no expert concerning Catalinas. Can anybody confirm this?

I never build a Vac-kit. So I wil exitedly follow your build.

My Wal now has a redone motor compartment. The structure of HUMA is not bad, but the ventilation openings are too small and the opening on the top is missing. Wing has been attached, too.

Now for the smaller parts.

I'd like to join the campaign with Hasegawa's H6K5:



It's old Hasegawa kit from 1969 repackaged with new decals and PE radar antennae. 1/72, fine raised panel lines, and looks like I need to add little rigging line.

OK, Bob, I will send you my rate sheet.

Here are the wing and fuselage assemblies all welded together.
I am not going to cut out the cockpit windows, Ill do something with decals after the painting is done, but i did drill out and counterbore every one of those little portholes. you cant see any light in there, but i think they will look good filled with Krystal clear.


also, for size comparison, a Catalina has arrived.



The instructions recommend a wing spar, that is what that piece of square tubing is for.

The Mars was the largest flying boat ever to enter regular production.

The wingspar in place

the wings mounted. Starting to look like an airplane.

unfortunatley the spar geometry wasnt perfect and the wing sits a tiny bit high, so there will be a little work fairing the joins.


Thats all for now. I might get a few hours to play on tuesday.

Bob & Oliver,
I can't vouch for the PBY1-5, which looks like what you are building there, due to the lack of landing gear, but I can state the PBY5A does have the de-icer boots. I just photographed a PBY5A over at the McChord field Air Park for a feature I wrote over on LSP. That aircraft from the 4th ARS has boots between the engines and the length of the wings. But it's a -5A, and it looks like yours does not have the retractable gear, which makes it likely a 3,4 or 5.

Jonathan, super quick work on a super aircraft-- is that PBY also in 1/144 scale? If so what kit is that?

Yes it is 1/144, its a slightly modified Minicraft PBY-5 amphibian (turrets removed) which I built for the 2014 sea Planes campaign
One of Minicraft's nicest 1/144 offerings
