Thanks for the good idea with my misfitting cockpit. I will go the hard way and listen to Russ advice and cut the triangular floor plate smaller and sand the instrument panel and seats slightly smaller.
Russ, I have to agree about those interwar flying boats. These are real gems. The Wal is manufactured by Amodel as far as I know. The Huma kit is still very nice, but the plastic is rather soft. I will go for the mail plane, that was on the catapult-ship Westfalen. There are some great clips on You tube. I will post the link, when I find it.

I'll "jump aboard" here-- that's the S42 and S23-- remember that article I referred you to on my CMR S-23 build? That's the plane. The S23 was actually built by Short. I saw Jonathan's 1/144 S42 on the vacform campaign web page-- what a dog that kit looks to be! I sure wish someone would release a state of the art injection kit of these big flying boats. I guess there's no money in it, although MiniCraft has committed now to the PBM Mariner series-- those are nice kits, but the civil market between the wars is sorely neglected-- and really that's the birth of long range civil transport.

that's the thing about vacuform kits. if you want a sikorsky flying boat model - this is all there is.

I couldn't tell if the wing is primered yet, it doesn't look like it so it's not exactly the technique I use, as I usually lay down a coat of primer first. I also draw in the panel lines with a fine tip mechanical pencil on top of the paint finish using a flexible ruler. Paul Budzik has some great panel line engraving techniques on his website, including engraving panel lines into the paint. He also has a beautiful scratchbuilt PBY which is worth seeing-- I recommend his site and videos. He's used the engraving in paint technique on a Boeing 314 model too.

Russ, nice link of tips. It was too detailed for what I will do on the PBY and have settled on some post shading instead to represent the lines or at least where they would possibly be.

I'm trying to place that Revell kit-- is it the old 1970s kit or something newer? You know it looks pretty good for an old kit if it's the 70s version-- how are the engines? I'm going to need to look for some engines for my P2Y in the upcoming (I hope) Vac campaign-- and if the engines and props are OK in this kit, I might consider picking up one or two from these-- yours looks pretty good!

Frederick: As I am in with another Dornier bird, I would like to see the DO-X built!
Going the hard way worked well on my wal. Cockpit is now enclosed and the hatch to the radio compartment can still be reached!

Bob, thanks buddy that would be great! I thought that looked like the old kit-- Acedemy makes a pretty nice kit (actually they make several versoins of the Catalina) with engraved panel lines and divots for rivets
, but that old Revell kit looks pretty nice, nad I bet the price point is much lower-- you're doing great work on the kit-- just goes to show what can be done with older kits if you're willing to do the work.

Oliver, the Wal looks great, and that radio operator's door will look good through the open cockpit now-- The Amodel kit is a little different from the Huma kit, which is a later version of the Wal I think. I know both are very hard to find. Will you be building a catapult from the Westphalia to display it on? That would be a neat model.

Bob, thanks for the photos, those engines look like they might do for a P2Y, cowlings too, maybe even the nacelles! I guess we should have some rules on the Vac-form campaign about how much of a model is vacced huh?? How much was the PBY kit and where did you get it?

Hello Bob,
the long way was to grind the interior walls to make them more hollow as trimming the triangular floor plate created not enough room. But now, it fits !

building a catapult would be a very cool scene. But, a scene in the natural element, water, would be cool one, too! I am in two minds about this.

The instruction says RLM02 gray for the upper structures and RLM01 silver for the bottom. But, on several pictures the bottom appears to be black and the upper surfaces look in a silvering tone. So, what is correct
