Welcome to the squadron Rob. 1 or 100 P-47s.. no problem. The more the better and we will want to see progress on any and all that you do build. You obviously 'really' like the P-47.
What is the unusual scheme you are talking about on the Hasegawa Bubbletop? Or will we have to wait for the pics to find out ;-)

Nige - Your idea for a separate thread for finished pics is a very good idea. It should be a really nice big photo album by the time everything is all said and done. When we get our first 'done' P-47 we'll get that started up.

One more Campaign build to do and I can start my Razorback

You have as all shaking with anticipation there Nige With all the rest of your great builds we have seen. I can't wait to see what you do with another Thunderbolt. Do I remember something mentioned previously of an anti-dazzle P-47?? hmmmmmm... Just kidding. Would look pretty cool tho.

Wayne,

Thanks for the welcome. The unusual cam scheme on the P 47 I refered too, is RAF Dark Green over Sky, I'll post some pix of this scheme shortly.

In the meantime, here is a 48 scale P 47d I forgot to mention earlier, also in an unusual cam sheme and built a few years ago:

This 1967 State of the Art Monogram kit was a steal @ $2.00, even though it had the control stick missing and came as a bag of loose plastic, but having the old AeroMaster decal sheet for RAF 'Jugs' that covered mostly SEAC birds, together with this OTU outfit based in Egypt, as an option included on the sheet and being somewhat different, in this cammo.

The enamels on this are all Xtra Color, the upper surface is Olive Drab / Sea Grey over Neutral Grey, applied free hand, by airbrush the weathering is pastels, the small amount of paint chipping is with a silver Roller Ball Pen, the flat finish on this is Xtra Color Flat Varnish.

With exception of the decals this was built from the bag. These pix show from cammo application before weathering to finished model.

I aquired another Hasegawa kit of the P 47d Thunderbolt this morning in the SEAC scheme

Wayne,

This is that unusual scheme of RAF Dark Green over Sky, these enamels are from the old AeroMaster 'Warbird' range, this subject is the 48 scale Hasegawa kit of the P47d 30/40 Thunderbolt [kit #JT 41], the demarcation line between the Sky and Dark Green on this was created using Humbrol Maskol and Tamiya masking tape, once the Dark Green was touch dry the Maskol was removed and the area dabbed with tape to remove any paint film.

A resin cockpit tub has been fitted to this subject.

Nice looking Birds there Rob. I espaically like the British version.
I finally got the replacement decal that i managed to up, so my Academy 1/72 P-47D Bubbletop is finished.
Sprayed with Alclad Polished aluminium, with some of the panels sprayed with a mix of Alclad dark alumnuim with a drop of jet exhaust .
Decals from the kit, remind me never to use Academy ones again, washed with N+W oils.
Andy

P.S I managed to lose a gear door at some point, i think it fell behind my desk . I'll take some better pics tomorrow.

Rob - Both your P-47s look really good - completed and in progress. I like the schemes on both of them. Nice job on the weathering too.

Andy - Great looking thunderbolt there too. I really like the look of the different shades of metal panels. I am really getting addicted to the alclad stuff

I'll get a thread going hopefully within the next day or two that will be a photo album of our finished thunderbolts. If I can do this right I'll put a link to the photo thread within this thread and also links back to this thread from the other. Or if anyone else wants to go ahead and get it started up before I do please feel free to. To keep things a little compact and if noone has any objections I think we ought to keep it just for ones actually finished within this thread.

Good modeling,
Wayne

Thanks for the kind words on the fininished and in progress.

There are others in 'progress', the Academy P 47d as has some issues with the checker nose decals, but I'll persist with the kit decals on this one. Otherwise it's buy another Academy and another Tamiya 'Bubbletop' and mix match the 'Eileen' scheme to the Tamiya kit.

Andy,
That's a neet Alclad finish on your subject, progressing with a 23rd F.G. P 51d in Alclad finishes, with the lightning bolt on each side.

All my 'Jug' kits are 48 scale.

Hi everyone

I have a companion thread set up for our Thunderbolt Photo Album. If you are in the forums that is the name for the thread.
Here is a link to the thread also.
https://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/forums/84236&page=1#698432

I'll try to keep a convenient link in some of my posts to this thread to make it a little easier at times to get to the thread so you can view or post your pics. Anyone else who wants to do the same thing is fine too.
I have a link in the photo album to come back to the current last page of the main Thunderbolt thread here. I will try to keep that updated as our pages get added here.

It is ready for anyone to start adding their jug pics once you get it done. It lt looks like Andy's P-47 is going to be our first one to be added once he gets some pics that he is happy with. If you have any comments you would like to make about the build, the decals, the kit, etc..etc... that would great to add along with your pics. It should turn in to a really nice photo album by the time we are all done.

Good modeling all,
Wayne

Hi Guys,
I have downloaded the finished pics into the other thread.
Now on to my second P-47. This one is the Tamiya P-47D Razorback, being built OOB and is an absolute joy to build. The detail on this kit is quite phenomenal considering its size.

Andy,
Compare the Tamiya and Hasegawa kits against each other and see there is considerable difference in size between them, the Tamiya kit is bigger in both length and wing span. Having the same kit 1/2 built myself the Tamiya offering is far better in detail and overall finish.

Now:-
The Academy P 47d Thunderbolt as per boxart, this is the progress even though stalled due to checker nose decals not playing by the rules, modification to this is just the addition of a resin seat.
Enamels are from the AeroMaster 'Warbird' range of US Green 42 over Neutral Grey.

Before kit decals and addition of resin seat.

With some kit decals applied, checker nose decals are a problem, but they are starting to behave after 1/2 a bottle of Mr Softner.

Boy Andy, you are really moving right along with the P-47 assembly line :-) You and Rob are really knocking them out.
The cockpit really does look good. I remember Leon making the same comment about the detail in that Tamiya 1/72nd kit.
Have you decided what scheme you are going for on this one?
Your 1st jug you added to the photo album looks great Andy. Very nice job.

Rob, your P-47 is coming along nicely. Hopefully the decals will quit fighting you and work out in the end. What version of P-47 is that one?
I like the addition of the gun bays on that one but they look different than the ones I am used to always see in old pics. These are more square openings and the ones I always see are big rectangular hatches with lots of gun belts.

Andy, Nice work on the t-bolt. Really like it. I am also really excited to watch your tamiya one; I absolutely love that kit!

Rob, Wow! You have a lot going. I really like the monogram t-bolt. I have that set of decals and am really excited to someday do one. Can't wait to see more...

Wayne,

The gun bays are cut this way on the Academy kits, as they give an option to display the gun bay only and not the magazine bins or belts, it's their way I supose to create options for the modeller.

The checker decals are behaving better and their are a few places that need touching up with paint.

Leon,

Thanks for the kind words, on the Monogram kit.
I hope sometime in the future to do another RAF P 47d in the SEAC scheme of Dark Earth/Dark Green over Medium Sea Grey and White theatre bands.

I am so happy today My replacement set of decals showed up YAY
So now I can get back to my jug
It is a nice looking set of decals and I may just have to do another P-47 razorback some day. One of the other schemes off this set I really like too called "Squirt" It would be a real shame to let some of these decals go to waste
I am really happy too for there are sets of decals for the props. I was pretty sure there would be. Take a lesson from me - masking tape and decals do not work well together when trying to occupy the same spot on a model :-) My little accident with the tape can now be fixed

I have some other real life things I have to do but I will be fitting in some more good modeling now

HI Wayne, and everyone
I've been working double shifts since July 1st so I haven't been around much. I'm afraid I've completely missed this thread until just now. As ironic as this might sound, I started my jug 3 months ago and have almost finished it now. I had no idea what so ever that you guys were even doing this thread.
My jug is the Tamiya 1/48 Razorback with the "Little Chief" decals. I'll try and get time to snap a pic tomorrow of her as she sits right now and post it here for you all. I must say that even though I haven't had lots of time to do any serious modeling lately, this jug is probably the best build I've ever done.....nice decals, preshading turned out nice, correct colors, etc.

Hi Rob,
Now that is interesting, i wonder how they came up with different sizes. Do you know which one is more accurate ( not that I'm a rivet counter or anything :-) ).

Hi VonCuda and welcome to the thread. We are getting a really nice group of P-47s going here. We will be watching for your pics, sounds like you have a really nice build there.

Your razorback looks darn good Andy. I like those washes you use. It looks really good. Is your third juggie still a 1/72nd? What are your plans for this one?

Nice work on the razorback Andy, and the two look great together. I'm with Wayne...what's the plans for the 3rd one?

G'day Andy,

I'm not a rivit counter either but the Tamiya kits of the Thunderbolts seem to be the more accurate of all Thunderbolt kits, the only reason as to how I discovered this was, I had both the Hasegawa and Tamiya Razorback kits under construction at the same time when the size comparison was noted. The above mentioned Tamiya kit was built as Don Gentle's mount prior to flying the famed 'Shangri La' P 51b Mustang, {sadly this was not one of my own models}.

Also if you compare the AM cockpit tubs that are available with the Tamiya kit cockpit offering the detail is the same all around.
When I get a chance to get back to my own model projects instead of the many contracted builds I have on the go, I'll take some shots of the Tamiya and Hasegawa kits together as a size comparison.

Hope this helps a little.

I came across this link by accident, it shows in the main index 3 pages for P 47 Thunderbolt's, the first page is walk around of some musuem pieces, the 3rd page shows some interesting profile sideviews of the P 47.

http://www.cybermodeler.com/resource1.shtml

I think I got this addy right and hope it helps.

Hi guys,
here's a picture of my jug as she sits right now. Still have to install the canopy, bombs, and fix a few minor details. Sorry about the picture size. It's been a while since I posted any pictures. Feel free to downsize it if anyone knows how.

Your jug is looking real good VonCuda. Should look really nice once you get all the last little bits done.

Excellent pics CRS - I still have yet to see a P-47 at any of the air shows I have been too. Last year I finally got to see a P-38 fly which was so cool. Maybe this next year I can add a P-47 to my list

Hi all!
Havent you been busy while Ive been away!!
Andy,,you are building like a madman!!,,The idea isnt to build all the P47's yourself,,,LOL. I told you youd like the Tamiya kit :-)
Talking of Tamiya Razorbacks,,,,Hi Hermon!!,,Good to see you back and building and your P47 is looking really nice.Great to see how your skills are developing as we were newbies together a year ago.
Rob,,they are some great looking P47s youve got there, and its nice to see some of the more unusual schemes being represented in this group build. What scale are the decals you listed?
Wayne,,yeah!,,the decals are here,,I am really looking forward to seeing your NMF finish in all its glory.Hope the decals over the invasion stripes dont give you too much trouble.
Great photos Chuck. Guess what my new desktop theme is? :-)
My work diary is starting to look even more manic than it did last week, but as soon as Ive finished my 109 I can start on some P47 mania of my own.I am really looking forward to building another one,,or two,or,,, :-)
