Looking good Automaton. You 'slog along' pretty well!
Cheers!

Hey, Sultan

I'm liking your Mig-15 too. Those stripes must have been a bear to paint! I'm mostly a prop guy, but the Mig-15 is one jet (along with the Harrier and the F-84) that appeals to me.
I'll be watching your progress.

Cheers!

Hi all!

Nice progress!

The stripes on the Mig are nicely done indeed. Any progress on that one?

Automaton, the blue looks spot on if you ask me.

Glad to see there is some life in the Russian skies. I will follow your builds with great interest

Thanks guys!
Automaton- The stripes weren't too tough to do. The 'sand' color took some time to choose
but after that it was just time spent with patients and brush.
Jean-Luc- Next step up will be markings and detail painting. Collecting more and more evidence to support "no upper wing marks" fairly common on Russian/N. Korean fighters.
Currently working on it's base -an in flight display. This is coming along MUCH better than I had expected. Won't be able to get back to the bench for a week or so due to the 'work' thing and SWMBO assignments/missions.
cheers!

Sorry to be such a late comer to the dance. I'm working on a 1/72 Eastern Express Mig-21bis to which I am adding Hi-Decal markings and a True Details ejection seat. I've added some details to the wheel wells and right now I am re-doing the cockpit.

The K36 seat is just there for reference.

Well, I'm still plodding along on the Yak--here's how it looks at the moment . . .

Now it needs dusting off, some of the masking (canopy, nav lights) replaced, and a panel line wash and clearcoat applied. I'll finish the landing gear and make a pitot (the kit one isn't very good) while the clear dries. I'm leaning toward using the rockets, but not the drop tanks on this build. I can't find any references as to whether both were ever carried simultaneously, but have my doubts whether such a small, light plane as the Yak-1 had that much payload. If it's down to one or the other, I'll use the rockets, as I think they have visual interest, and alter the plane's rather nice lines less.

Cheers

The sturmovik is moving along! i had posted some cockpit shots way back and now I have some more photos. This is my first plane build in a long time so it has taken much longer than expected but thats mainly due to work and other related issues. I made the mistake of priming the parts prior to realizing that the wings on the single seater were mainly wooden. You can see in the photos where it got sanded off during the seam filling! I also had some fit issues along the wing root and had to fill and sand several times. These issues were discussed by gregax when he built his sturmovik. He posted much better pics showing these issues. This model is the Accurate Miniatures sturmovik with the optional ski set up.

I am planning on making a dio with this plane and I found some 1/48 scale figures to use at a local IPMS competition. The figure looks so small next to the plane that I thought maybe there was a scale issue with the figure. But he is sans arms in the photo which probably makes him look smaller. I also have found some decent sturmovik photos and this plane was actually quite large. I am not completely familiar with russian planes which is why I assumed it was smaller I suppose. I saw a photo with a man on the wing of a sturm and he seemed to be similar in size as the figure is on mine so I will assume that all is well.

I used tape on the aileron to represent that it was fabric--I copied this from Jean-Luc(I think). I did this free hand and it isnt completely accurate but I will accept it in my mind since I cant find any decent photos showing this portion of the plane.

I took these pics and was shocked at how different certain things appear in person versus in a pic. I guess its the angle that you hold the model when working on it that makes things look different. The shading in the pics brings out things like imperfect seam lines and such.....Ughhh. Sorry if some pics are a lil fuzzy--I will work on this in future pics. I hope to start painting soon since there is only a month left.

Yeah, it's kinda weird how pictures make the smallest imperfections in your work just "jump out" at you. If you've ever worked with an optivisor (at my age my close focus is starting to go, so I use a 3X one ) you've probably noticed that anything that looks even remotely acceptable through it looks really clean in normal viewing. I think that's the same principle by which photos point out flaws--you have magnification AND time to really notice stuff.

Anyway, looks like you're hip-deep in prep work right now. That's probably my least favorite phase in a build. I have an AccMin Shturmovik and an Eduard color etch set in my stash, but seeing your experience with the kit and the one Gregax built make me a bit apprehensive about wading in! Looks like you're pretty close to being ready to paint--I'll be following your progress . . .

Cheers

Hi guys!

Nice to see some more progress for the VVS Group Build...

Both the Yak and the Sturmovik look great. Patrick, what brand is the 1/48 scale figure you are using?

Keep the pictures coming.

Jean-Luc-- I am cheating a little with the figures actually. I found the Tamiya 1/48 scale german tank crew maintenance set item 32547. I am going to try and manipulate them a little so they appear to be a soviet maintenance crew. I just need to get some fabric colors and find a few nice pics possibly that might show what a typical outfit looked like. That tamiya figure set has some poses that I want to use in my diorama and I couldnt find a soviet figure set that had any good poses. The one you brought to my attention has all of the guys just standing(basically). I figure that they are small enough that I can make them appear to be a soviet maintenance crew.

Hi all!

I realized I don´t have the time to build a Su-27 within this Campaign!

I have settled for the ICM 1/48 YaK-9T instead, a quite nice little kit.

I will use decals from a Aeromaster sheet I bought for this model.
Perhaps a set of etched seatbelts too, otherwise it will be a simple OOB build.

I have started the build and done some basic assembly.

Jean-Luc, I hope It´s alright with the kit-switch!

Unfortunatley, I can´t show any pics of this model, or ANY other model for that matter!

My picture-host have re-organized the site and all old links are now defunct!
This affects ALL of my pics I have posted here on these forums since I joined Aeroscale (except those uploaded to the gallery on kitmaker).

I don´t know when I can post pics again!
But You can be assured that I´m desperatley searching for a new host at the moment!

This Is very annoying to me and to all who want to see my pics.

Cheers!

Greetings all;

Unfortunately the Fokker D.VII is all I am going to be able to conjure up at this minute. But at least I got that one finished. Seems there will be a bit of something coming up in the winter Over the Front on a Soviet Fokker C.I you may find of interest.

Hi all,

I thought I'd join this campaign! I don't know if my entry will be allowed, since it is even smaller than 1/144 (looks like I'm on a downward slope, eh! ). On the other hand, I'm entering with no less than three subjects in a special "seasons' greetings" diorama. Hopefully, this will be a christmas treat for y'all (especially Jean-Luc).

This is where I'm at right now. As you can (hopefully) see, it is two Polikarov I-16:s and an airfield starter AS-2 (scratch built) on GAZ AAA chassis. The scale is 1/285. In other words, it is small!!!

This is the boxart picture that inspired me.

I've used models from a company called GHQ, who makes models primarilly for wargaming. The detail is awesome for this scale. Here is the Gaz AAA truck that I used as base for my airfield starter. I've just tried some wash and dry-brushing to highlight the details.

I then used streched sprue and plasticard to modify the truck into an AS-2 starter.

The numbers for the aircraft were taken form the fine print from other decal sheets!

I worked pretty hard on these I-16:s to make them nice The red stars from GHQ were pretty bad, so I had to enhance the red with a razor point pen. It bled a little, but I will fix that. Besides, I don't think that will show in the final model... Do you see the globe in the background?!

The pine tree will cover up the water filler hole (and hopefully add a little christmas spirit!). I'm thinking of adding a flag pole with the Soviet flag waiving.

Here is the diorama on the outside...

...and here it is inside the globe! If we all make a wish (and if everything works the way that I hope that it will), I'm pretty sure that snow will fall soon!

Ps. The only issue I have right now is which kind of varnish I am going to use in order to protect the diorama. As you have probably figured out, it is all going to be under water... If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to post!

Cheers!

Stefan, as long as you build something with red stars on it, it's fine for me!

No problem Stephen. You already did a great job with the D.VII and I thank you for that. I can imagine you have a workbench full of Roden models at the moment.

Hey Björn, thanks a lot! This is indeed a very nice Christmas gift! It's one of the nicest modelling project I've ever seen! I'm really happy and proud that you've entered it in the VVS Campaign...

I can't wait to see the snow falling on this winter diorama.

Let's hope you guys will be able to finish in time for the deadline: decembre 31st...

The snowdome is great!! So nice to something so original being built. Very nice work.

My Yak 9T is on the final straight. Just a gloss coat to seal the weathing, dull coat & sticking on the breakable bits and it's ready for combat. Horray!

Hi Jean-Luc

Sorry to mess you about, but I'm afraid I've had to drop out of the campaign - with samples coming in and momentum building up at work, I can see I'll never meet the deadline. I'll try to post my MiG sometime in the New Year.

All the best

Comrades!

Given the theme of this campaign, I decided to add a flag pole with the VVS flag waiving.

This final addition gives it even more hight to the diorama, which I think will look good in the snow globe. Now it is time to close is all up!

Hmmm, the forecast predicts a heavy snowfall in the Leningrad area tomorrow...

Cheers!

Hello everyone,

I really enjoyed the nice models that have been completed or in progress. I wanted to let you see my very brief progress so far. I’ve been surprised there has not been more modern aircraft. I had this on my shelf.

I went ahead and started and have the main components assembled. I need to start on seam work next.

I am going to use aftermarket decals but I’m going to hold off showing them until later in the build. I think they are striking for a combat VVS MIG-29.

Sincerely,
Brian

Jean-Luc.

SU-27 started today. I'm very much trying to get it finished for 31st, but have only until 24th to do it. I'll be very close. If i fail it's my own fault for entering too many campaigns and doing them in the wrong order.

With the deadline fast approaching I thought I'd better post just to prove that I'm still alive and kicking My Zvezda Mig-3 will hopefully get primed today and I'll post a progress pick soon,

And finally the winter arrived at the little airfield outside of Leningrad, and heavy snow started to fall!

I used the products of Eberhard Faber for snow and water claryfier. PLease note that it doesn't take much snow in order to get at nice effect! I think I might have added a tad to much! We got a real snow storm going!!! But hey, it's very eye-catching

Shake it, baby!

Most of my plans seem to work! The VVS-flag, however, has already started to go pale and I'm afraid that it's soon going to turn into a white flag! Too bad for the battle hungry I-16 pilots. One may, perhaps, look at it as a sign of Christmas? Another big worry is that I made the ground from regular clay (that dries by itself). It looks as if the field is going to be very muddy!! Where's the permafrost when you need it?!?

Anyhow, this was a really fun experiment, and hopefully I've learned something from my mistakes - next time the ground will be made of fimo-clay that is burned in the oven! I have two more snow globes planned before the holidays!

And since Christmas is around the corner, I wish for all of you to get a lot of plastic in your stockings!

Cheers!

Hi,

Got it primed today. Some areas have been shown up as needing attention ... Will try to get the undersurfaces done during the week and next weekend will be make or break time .. fingers crossed eh? Going away for Xmas on the 22nd so it looks like it's gonna be close. Wish me luck,
Mike
