Hi again
OK - here you go. 3 examples of this aircraft were impressed into RAF service during WW2. What is it?

Hi again
No ideas yet? OK - first clue: It's British. Try looking for an a/c company that was based not far away from present-day Heathrow airport...

Thanks for the clues Rowan, I was just lucky enough to see it before some others I'm sure.
Well as usual here's one, that won't be too difficult I'm sure (as is typical for my offerings)

Hi Chuck
Well, I know what it is, but I'll stay out of this one. I hope Czech Models are looking at our quiz - this would make a superb follow-up to their Ryan Fireball!

Hi Rowan,
I have plans to build the one I have in my 1/72 stash as part of my next project, the project after "Orange October"

Hi Chuck
Yes - I've just been looking at my own potential "Orange October" offering - I'll have to see if I can knock it out as a quick-build.

Shiver me timbers, I'd answer, but then have to walk the plank and come up with a question or sluff it off to someone else as usual. Hoist the Jolly Roger mates.

If this persists I'll have to post a photo of the aircraft in question flying with a Cutlass

I'm amazed no-one got the Pirate - I love the early jets. Maybe this distinctive odd-ball will be more familiar...

Hi Rowan,
I really like the way the guys in the photo are looking at it, so as to say "What the heck is that ?"
NACA rejected further development because they thought the design was "too advanced".

Hi Chuck
The photo was taken by Cdr. L. M. Johnson, USN and formed the back cover of Airfoil issue #4 way back in 1986. There seem to have only ever been 5 issues (the last was in 1987)... a great shame, as it was really excellent! Can anyone fill in more of the Airfoil Publications story?

I knew it was too easy! This one lasted four whole minutes.
It's VL pyry, I'll have to accept that answer, you got the type right, over to you.
[nitpicking mode: ON]
Well, to be exact, that is a VL Pyry I (mainly used as a trainer), the protype that got the serial PY-1. The 40 aircraft then ordered by the air force were known as Pyry II, with serials running from PY-2 to PY-41
[/nitpicking mode: OFF]
Here's a chance for quick and easy extra points: what was the trainer that later replaced VL Pyry?

Hi Eetu
Well it wasn't that easy! It's highlighted a shocking gap in my knowledge in regards to Finnish aircraft! After a crafty bit of Googling... was its successor the Valmet Vihuri?
