I haven't thought a whole lot about what I'd use yet. I have access to Alclad and MM Metalizer. I kinda wanted to try the MM buffing powder, but seeing all of Nige's Alclad makes me want to try it. What's your guys' take on the Model Master Metalizers?

Hey, +1 to the Sticky mention, shouldn't this thread be up top?

I suffered a set back with the Yak-9T. I'm going to have to use Strip-a-Kit to get it back to where I want it.

In the meantime, I'll try to submit this for the end, an Eduard 1/72nd Lavochkin La-7 finished in HSU Sergej Fodorovich Dolgushin's markings.

Hey Carl, I am building a FW 190 D9 for this campaign. I might still join with the ME 109, but then it will be a second build later.

I will build "Black 4 + -" from II/JG 6. I am trying to determine whether the undersides are bare metal or RLM 76. I cannot decide how to paint it. Any comments or insights are welcome. See more pictures of the aircraft and more on this issue at the end of THIS TREAD

Spitfire update time..

After a 10 day enforced break due to a broken finger, I am now back at work so it is time to shoot some paint. Before I bust my finger I managed to prime and pre-shade, but didn't take any photos because that stage is really boring. So, here we go. Paints used are Xtracrylix, never used them before so this is a learning curve for me.

Underside, sprayed with RAF Sky BS210.

Upper surfaces sprayed with RAF Dark Green over RAF Dark Earth.

Close up of cockpit area. Seatbelts will be added later, will use Eduard prepainted photo etch items. Paint chip effect achieved by undercoat of Humbrol aluminium and then dabbed with Maskol. The Maskol was quite old and seemed to go a bit thick so was hard to apply. This is the first time I've tried this, needs refinement and will be toned down when I weather the plane. (hopefully)

A slow night at work tonight so I thought I might start the decalling. I left my Microsol/set at home and the decals are a pain. I got this far and gave up before I slung the model against the wall! Anybody else have trouble with Tamiya decals, they really don't want to go on, a fight all the way.

That all for now, more soon,

Steve

The Gladiator is mostly together and primed. Only one problem with this kit so far, the canopy. It's nice and clear and very thin. But the centre section doesn't really fit in the closed position. It's fits over the rear canaopy portion perfectly, leading to believe that it is meant to be like that. So that's how i will finish it...it's temporarily fixed closed for painting purposes only.

Looks good, Steve. It chipping on the wings is a little heavy for my taste, but weathering will probably solve that.

Looks good, Andrew. It will nice to see it in colours.

Here is a small update on my FW 190 D - it is also in overall white base coat. I need to solve the question of the RLM 76 or bare metal part of the lower wings. Maybe I will just make a decision and move ahead with it.

Well, got the decals on but took about 4 hours as they fought me all the way. Using Microsol/set seemed to make them worse, they seem very fragile, just needing the slightest excuse to break up.

Most of them were fine after they were on and left for a while, but the tail flash just disintigrated, it now looks awful. I don't have a spare in the box so I think I will paint it on. It should be easy enough (famous last words!!)

Has anyone else had trouble with Tamiya decals or am I just unlucky. They are a real let down in what else is a beautiful kit. I have another one to do but am going strictly after-market on that one.

Uhh... bad luck with the tail flash. I have had similar problems, but mostly with Hasegawa decals. But as you say it should not be a problem to paint it on. Good luck with repainting it.

Otherwise your effort paid of. The rest of the decals look very fine.

Just for a bit of fun I'm going to indulge in a bit of nostalgia for this build.
A 1:72 Airfix Spitfire 1a. The first thing that struck we when opening the box was the smell. It smells of airfix! I've build a few models since coming back to the hobby but no Airfix. The smell reminds me of making models when I was little. I don't know if airfix use a different plastic but it definitely smells of 1982. Has anyone else noticed this?
Here are some pics of the box and the contents really basic but looks like a spit even before a drop of glue hits it.

Yeah, i know what you mean, JP. I have been tempted several times to buy some of the reboxings of ESCI's or Matchbox's old kits.
Recently I build an old Italeri reboxing of ESCI's 1/72 Sherman tank for a campaign on Armorama.

As you might have seen I am building an old Fujimi FW 190 D9 for this campaign. Another trip down memory lane

You all are doing great work. I am personally falling behind a bit. My wife had neck surgery on Tuesday, so I wont be around much until after the weekend. But do keep the great pictures coming.

Carl: Keep your wife happy. That's allways prio #1.

Things are building up here, so now I'm starting to think about my 109. I have got a Fujimi K in 1:48, but it lacks decals. That, I guess is a good reason to ty to paint them on.

The late war markings are just simple balkenkräutze, but numbers can be more difficult. So I found this one at Ipms-Stockholms website.

I like the mixed camo too. Brown and green top, sky fuselage and pale blue underside of the wings.

Questions are
Does anyone know where to find "decryption" of the geometric markings Luftwaffe used? Chevrons, triangles and such. That way I can just pick an easy one to mask
Weren't the late Bf 109's partly nmf on the undersides?

Carl, be there for your wife. This is after all "just" a hobby.

Tony, nice choice of aircraft.

I am away from my references now, so I cannot help you with all the camouflage details.
I cannot remember seeing any 109s in unpainted metal, but I guess there could easily have been some. I have seen quite a lot of FW 190s with unpainted undersides of the wings, so it could have been done on 109s as well.
Here are some useful links:

Bf 109 PHOTOS

LUFTWAFFE MARKINGS
I think there are a few inaccuracies on this site, but in general I think the information is fine. Anyway there are some markings that you might be able to use as templates for you masking.

I am currently away from my FW 190 D9 build for this campaign. So until I get back and finish that build, I will build the Mistel 5 as a second build for this campaign - although I might actually finish it before the FW 190 D9.

This campaign is looking interesting. Personally, having inspected the Lysander and found the kit severely wanting - change of plan. Now building Yak -3 probably a Normandie-Nieman group and possibly Louis Delfino's aircraft. Kit is Eduard Weekend at 1/48 scale. Start on 23/6

Here is a update on my Mistel 5 build. Things are moving ahead very quickly since I have holiday and the weather for the last couple of days has been very suitable for modelling indoors.

The base coat is on. Next I will brush paint the camouflage pattern on the "flying bomb" and the HE 162.

More to follow....

Well,

this is the kit. It will be more or less OOB. Some parts will come from other unfinished Spitfires (like the wing tips and vertical and horizontal stabilizers).

Apologies for the foto-quality.

I hope for this week to be able to fill a few sink-marks and do the sanding, and maybe do the first painting. The kit itself is quite nice. Fit so far is quite good, construction is fairly easy. Only minor issue is the decent amount of flash.

Cheers,

Harm
