No trouble at all Patrick , it was a very good question you had . When aircraft had their down time for servicing or just nothing to shoot at !!! They where washed and cleaned . Dust and dirt caused drag . Noted : The paint really wasn't all the flat base either it had a shine to it .
I believe Steffen has posted pic's of this . So the staining might not show up all that well in pic's ? Not saying that this is right or wrong , but black and white photo's can be miss leading . I'm sure Matt will post some pic's here soon on the subject ..................................

..yes you're right Terri ....now I haven't done much modelling for this campaign (almost none in fact ) but here's a quote from this new book that might help in this particular discussion..

Obergefreiter Wilhelm Schleenvoigt was a technician with II./JG4 in late 1944 at Welzow near Berlin..

" my main duties involved keeping our Fw 190s looking 'spick and span' . One of my principal chores involved cleaning the grime from the gun ports & the area of the cooling louvres on the flanks of the fuselage - the sort of onerous job that was beneath the likes of a first mechanic. I was also charged with refueling the aircraft and moving it to and from its hide...".

The Fw 190 maintenance manual stated " every 12.5 hours of flight, clean off staining from the a/c using kerosene and a brush".

....some great builds here guys..well done !

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen.

Here is my completed Butcher Bird just in the nick of time.

I had a bit of a disaster with this one. After I had applied the decals and let them dry for a few days I went to wash off the decal setting solution and guess what happened.. yep, some decals decided to leave the scene of the crime as well! So one of the walkway dashed lines disappeared never to be seen again.

Anyway, a nice easy Hasegawa build that presented only a few small hassles. Still learning about weathering and the model looks glossy in the pictures but not to my eye here.. weird!!

I finished my entry for the campaign today with a month and a bit to go (another first for me)
It's the Tamiya 1/48 kit built out of the box with the only addition of Eduard seat belts. I entirely brush painted this with Tamiya paints and the decals were out of the Eduard kit.

Enough waffle, without further ado here's the pictures

My only disappointment is that I somehow managed to get some dust/debris in my final coat of Klear

As always comments are welcome

Edit: the canopy frame has been touched in since the photos were taken (so no need to nit pick there AT )

Wow what a scheme perhaps there should be a captured aircraft campaign
to see more of these.

I have a dilemma. The hobby boss kit decals for the d-9 are for white 1 of jv44.
I can't find any reference to that plane. Does anyone have any reference for it?
If so then please share,

If not do I

a) just put them on anyway?

b) Try to do rot 3 which has the same inscription as the hobby boss decals using
some left over tank decals

c) I've got a chance to get decals for rot 4 which has an interesting finish as it
was

It took him 2 coats of red. He has done the exhaust piping just after he took the pic like the canopy framing.

Well I've made my decision. I got some experten decals for red 13 JV44.
No conversion to a D-11 needed and that means I've finally got a profile I'm happy with.
Better break out the airbrush tonight then.

Well its done and I still have time to spare. Work has been really crazy so not much time at the bench. Paints are Testor Acryl and Decals are Eagle Strike.

Jean - Luc and Terri:
Thank you for the kind words. I really enjoyed this project.

Allen:
I can not believe that gloss finish was done by brush. Great work.

Thanks Carl for getting the campaign going.

Taylor

Wow Taylor, that's a neat one. Can't really say what I like the most, but it's a tie between the wheel wells, the odd-white-topside and the blue-silver-natural-metal bottom. Hmm, that would be most of the whole plane then, hmmm

Sweet one anyway Tony

Brilliant Taylor it has that late war feel about it that's for sure.

dense mottle added. next to mask and spray RLM75 where the tactical markings go.
Used a babys bib as a rag to apply it. the towelling seemed to have as good a consistency
as I could get. Couldn't really get it to work with an airbrush.
Pics clickable for close ups.

Wow! Excellent Dora, Taylor. It looks fantastic and the unpainted areas really sets it apart from other colour schemes.

Hi all,

I thought I might crash ans burn on this campaign as I didn't have a subject, and certainly very little time. Well, my son got me this for Fathers Day:-

And now I have a couple of free days so I will have a go at getting it done, along with trying to get my Jet Provost done for the Trainer campaign.

Will be OOB as I have very little time, I will do the FW190 8-R11 version. No idea if its accurate, but llets see what happens. Made a start:-

Wings together, wells, gear doors and undercart legs painted RLM02.

Cockpit tub assembled and painted RLM66 and details painted. Seat belts have been painted on as I have no replacements and they are moulded anyway.

Thats all for now.. more later hopefully.

Looks like a nice start.

Seems like I'm dragging along and struggling with my builds all the time now...
First I had problems with my twinseat campaign entry with wonky wings, and now I have very similar trouble with my A8. The problem with the VL Pyry kit was clearly different fuselage halves causing the wing misalignment, but this was puzzling me. I noticed the whole plane looked very odd when looked at from the front. Like the wings were out of alignment with the fin and the stabilisers. Each component seemed to be properly aligned when looked at separately. The fin was straight against the fuselage. Stabilisers were perpendicular to the fin, and the wings level when compared to the fuselage (a ruler placed against the flat top of the gun cover is a good measure).

I was sure I glued the wings on properly, there were no steps at the wing root joints which would have explained the weird appareance. A warped fuselage was another possibility, but I didn't remember anything anymore except that the halves fitted nicely to each other so I reasoned warping wasn't likely to be the culprit (fuselage halves warped exactly the same to fit each other would really be quite a coincidence)
I opted to place the plane on a cardboard box, take a photo of it from the front and start drawing lines on it on the computer. As it's taken on a camera held by hand, it's nothing near exact science, but close enough for me.
Seems like the left stabiliser is causing the issue...

Looks like the wing is also still a bit off, but I think I can live with that. I've had enough of these misalignments with the Pyry I'm building at the same time and I'm not going to want to go ripping off anymore wings anytime soon.

Well, I have been rolling on this for a little while, but failing to update, so now i'll go ahead and do so.

I am using the Tamiya A-8 that I backdated to an A-7 by deleting the fuel filler access on the port side, the panel line for the asociated fuel tank, and adding louvers to the cooling slots behind the engines (shown in mostly closed position on my model, since that was esiest to achieve).

I decided to build an A-7 because the Tamiya kit has very exaggerated wing bulges for the A-8 which I didn't want to use. The A-7 has the cool looking cowl bulges (which I HAD to have) without the upper wing bulges for the outer cannon, so problem solved.

I was initially going to do this machine and had things painted up for it:

but then I found the following one decided to do that one instead, because I like the field applied green camo and checkers:

So for as to my actualy progress, a few photos:

first, primed and the RLM 76 shot.

And then I painted it to the previous plan (including yellow lower cowl) then decided to add the green camo (I am choosing to interpret the color scheme differently than the profile artist), resulting in:

The wing cannons were replaced with stainless steel tubing of the proper diameter

Oh, I also used the True Details cockpit set, but I'll be displaying the canopy closed because i wasn't super impressed with it - the seat was great, and in general it was better than the kit parts, but it just doesn't scream for an open cockpit.

Looks really nice! I especially like the mottling and the camo in general.
Don't forget to relocate the pitot tube as well. It was located mid-wing on A7s.
