Hi paul, Welcome to the campaign. Is Johnny Zumbach the guy that had Donald Duck painted on his Spitfires?
All the best.

Hi all,

Just signed up for this campaign, I got given two Spitfires for Xmas and will build both for this campaign. First one is Tamiyas most excellent MkI and will be built in the codes PR-S of H.S. 'George' Darley, C/O of 609 Squadron during the BoB. Started yesterday, progress so far:-

The other one is Revells 1/72 Mk.V,

Also started yesterday:-

Just about to sit down and crack on with both now.

Hi all.
Managed to find some time to do a bit more work on PS890 this morning. Almost done the cockpit. Just need to fit the seat, armour plate, sutton harness and oxygen bottles. I carefully cut out a hole for the camera. Rather than just drilling a circular hole to represent the camera window, I decided to represent the hatch and mask the window when it's painted. The door for the pilot was fitted and the joint filled as this Spit was had a pressurised cockpit. So to minimise leaks they did not have the door fitted. Looking forward to buttoning up the fuselage.

Being a basically lazy soul I finally found the Azure colour I needed for the underside of my Spitfire in the Vallejo range. Now I just have to work our how to thin it and use it as I have never used Vallejo before. It is not in the model-air range as my LHS doesn't carry them.

G'day Tim !

Yes Jan Zumbach had Donald painted on his Spitfires.

The reason was that Jan "Johnny" was seen to have a "sloping nose" by his comrades, (1) so his nickname became 'Donald" (Donald Duck).

Therefore the Nose art on his 'Spit'. Great story, great pilot and a really interesting post war history too

I'm really looking forward to this build.

I'll be using Life Color Acrylics and Eduard Zoom PE for the Cockpit on the Tamiya kit (with the Techmod decals).

Cheers

Paul

Lovely photos Paul. The weathering on the wing root is interesting to see. The mirror has a unusual look to it as well. Always interesting see photos of the real thing. Thanks for posting.

Hi all,

Just letting you know I will be starting a 1/48 Hasegawa Mk. VIII with RAAF markings, I have a few decal sheets available but am leaning towards an early shark mouth version from the grey nurse squadron from the Aeromaster Aussie Spits part 3 sheet. I also have an Ultracast seat to add to the cockpit.

I cannot post any pics at the moment as my card reader has stopped working (it will give me time to wrap up a few other builds first)

Cheers for now

Nice progress, Warren. You are really at a building spree at the moment. The kits are flying and rolling out of your hobby area!

I will be building Airfix old Spitfire Vb for this campaign. Either a desert machine or a lend Lease Soviet machine. A Spitfire with Soviet stars would be something out of the ordinary.

Can anybody with a little more knowlegde on Spitfires tell what version the Spitfire on the top with the white tail is? It looks like a Mk. IX to me with the pointed tail, but I am not sure.
The two below must be Mk. Vs as I see it (?)

Hi Jesper.
I think you are correct in thinking the spitfire illustrate is a Mk IX. The lower Spit I think is a PR I a photo reconnaissance spit. Interesting range of marking on these spits Jesper.
All the best.

@ Ayhan: nice speed build on your Spit.

@ Warren: dont you just love that color.

I did something with my Hobbycraft Mk. XIV the plastic is very think and the instructions are a litle hard to understand regarding where to put what part. But hey for the price it is ok.

notice the putty that was used to fill in the holes in the spinnier back. The radiator/coolers on the wing under side fit too close to the wheel opening.

Got the other camo colour on using my paper mask technique and a little free-hand. Very close to finished now.

Tamiya XF-52 Dark Earth over Gunze 71 Middle Stone. Not far from finished now.

Looking good chaps.
Bob, the plastic on your spit looks nice and solid, how are you finding the Hobbycraft XIV. Warren the camouflage is looking great. I like using paper templates for this sort of camouflage. The de-marcation line is always a bit softer.
All the best

Progress post.

Used the Blutak/Silly Putty method for the camo. I think I should have given it more dark green. I am not, however, going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good; If I try to add more I'm pretty sure I'll screw it up. So it's going to have to do as is.
