Hi guys! Not that I'm actually DOING anything on any actual Spitfire, but I wanted to dip my oar in on the painting thing. I have a bunch of 1/48 Spits so a while back I used a set of Tamiya painting instructions as a guide and actually cut up a pair of kitchen rubber gloves as paint masks and saved 'em. Now when I do a quarter scale Spitfire, I use rolled up pieces of poster stickum on the edges of the masks when I paint.

I figure that's pretty much how the Brits did it! Except maybe for the poster stuff.

And I've got the last colour down.

Hi mycroft. An excellent job on the camo, bye-the-way.

Looks like you cut the masking tape to suit your camo pattern. I was wondering if you found that easier than using the "rolled-up-sausage" TicTac method used on projects by others. Did you have any issues with the tape lifting paint?

Note I'm working in 1/72, so the blu-tac method is a little problematic for getting good demarcations on the relatively hard separation that the TLS scheme should have. I've used both methods in the past and prefer the cut tape method for 1/72 and the blu-tac method for larger scales where a little softer demarc looks fine.

Tape lifting paint can be an issue, but if you peel at an acute angle and don't use paint with adhesion issues (like MM Acryl) it's usually not a problem. I'm using the Tamiya paints here, the three colours specially released for their 1/32 Spitfire plus their Sky and IJN Interior Green which is a close match to RAF interior green.

I finished getting my decals applied and was happy for the most part. Had some wrinkle issues with the lower wing roundels, but a few applications of Solvaset has taken care of that. Some minor silvering here and there that was also dealt with using Solvaset. Flat coat is drying and then it's time for final assembly and some light weathering. "Q"

Hold on to your hats everyone, I've made some progress! I present, the interior (or most of it):

Pacific Coast 1/32 Spitfire IXc, the first Israeli Spit.

I also have a theory on the "primer green" color the aircraft was mostly painted. The Avias arrived from Czechoslovakia at about the time the Spit was being rebuilt. What if they used the same green paint (which I've seen described as RAL 6013 Reed green or a late war RLM 83)? I wouldn't be surprised if they got some of the paint from the Czechs too. Seems to make as much sense to me as anything else, we'll run it up the flagpole and see who salutes!

Good job Matt, by the way!

Nice bit of thinking Michael, I would run with that. Should make an interesting looking Spit. Glad to see you made your mind up about which type to go for. The Pacific Coast MkIX has long been on my list of "to acquire" so I will be really interested to read what you think.

Matt as ever your build looks great, nice one. That's the way I use masks for camouflage. It's one of those ideas that you think, surely the blast from the airbrush will lift the the masks, but it does'nt and always works a treat. Thanks for sharing.

Hoping, no I am going to do some work on my Pr XIX this weekend. I will have it ready for some primer by this evening.
All the best and keep up the excellent work everybody.

Hi all
A bit of progress yesterday. Started work on the contra rotating props, I am using the Aeroclub props and looking at photos of PS 890 discovered the blades were the wrong shape, so I did some re-working. I have included the kits spinner alongside the Aeroclub spinner. Also noticed when I removed the kits canopy from it's protective wrapping that there is a noticeable seam on top. Rubbed it down with some fine micromesh polishing cloth and dry from Alclad and a quick rub down on some denim. I will buff it up a bit more before applying some Klear.

Just put the wraps on this with one final mishap. The carpet monster ate my rear view mirror as I was grabbing it with the tweezers... Oh well, it's done.

Hi all
Nice one Matt, the 'Borough of Lambeth' looks excellent.

I have completed the build of the contra prop for PS 890. It took a lot longer to create than I thought it would. Noticed this afternoon while studying the prop positions of PS 890 at rest, that the aircraft has a three spoke wheels, and the kit only comes with a four. A bit more surgery tomorrow me thinks. I have had to postpone the applying of the primer this evening. Stupid me forgot to fill in the ejected cartridge holes for the machine guns

Hi all
A bit of progress on PS 890 today. Made and glued on various bulges under the wing Attached the props, windscreen and rear part of the canopy. I was not happy with the location of the camera port behind the pilot, so have filled the hole and redrilled the hole. Just glued the flaps to the radiator. Possibly some paint tomorrow, but then again I said that last weekend
All the best.

Matthew: That's one lovely Mk IIa

Tim: Your Seafire's coming along nicely. I have to say that the longer nose/spinner of the FR47 does make the entire aircraft look a lot meaner than the shorter variants.

And here's an update on my Vb, paint's fixed and I'm starting on the decals.

Hi Adam, thanks it is coming along. I think thats why I like Griffon powered Spits so much, they just look that more aggressive than the Merlin powered Spit's. I keep finding new photos of PS 890 so I keep tinkering around with it. Discovered there is no evidence of the two lights near the undersuface wingtips as found on the Academy XIV kit. So I have just filled the holes in with sprue. Also the two strips just outboard of the wheel wells that I added, are way too long so they are being trimmed down. I think I am getting to the point where I will be saying to myself thats enough, get on with some painting.
By the way Adam the Spit I am building is a Mk XIX. One of the owners of PS 890 installed a Avro Shackleton Griffon engine and it's contra rotating props when rebuilding it.
I have seen PS 890 several times now, on static and flying displays and I just love it.
All the best.

A modified PRXIX with a Shackleton Griffon? what a unique subject PS890 is. I'd made the assumption it was a Seafire just based on the prop.

Oh, and here's the update pic I forgot to put in my last post:

And we're done. Brief bit of drama at the end as the floor monster ate the aerial, but a cut-down Ju88 aerial from the spares box proved workable as a replacement.

Hate that. Thought I was the only one that had a hungry floor monster (I work over the rough concrete in the basement of my 100 year old house - impossible to find small parts on), but I guess I'm not alone.

Tim,

Thanks! Yep, this is completely box stock. Pacific Coast kits use Eduard pre-painted photo etch and as far as I can tell are probably the best instrument panels out there!
