Hi all
This is my project. Creating this Spitfire PrXIX, PS890 with contra rotating props [ex-Shackleton props] from the Academy 1/48 Spitfire MkXIVc kit. I have Quickboost's resin XIV cowling and rounded exhausts, plus Aeroclub's plastic injected contra rotating props to help.
All the best.

And it's unboxed. Started painting as well, hit all the appropriate bits with XF-71. Looks like I'm going to do the US markings.

Gotta give Italieri props on the marking options. None of the standard RAF in the UK options are included. Instead you get one USAAF Spit in Temperate Land, one Malta Spit Trop and a second North Africa Spit without the usual Trop filter.

Hi all
Thanks for that Allen, your doing a great job.
Started on my Spit after lunch. I removed the moulded engine cover with my newly acquired razor saw. Really took my time with this part of the build. Discovered with some additional cutting where the spinner goes, I could fit the replacement Quickboost resin engine cover, without trimming any resin. Fit is pretty good and will be better once the adhesive is applied. The Quickboost exhaust are loads better than the kit ones. Started constructing the cockpit as well. The bulged hatches for accessing the wing cannons are not a feature of the PrXIX. So I fitted some plasticard in there place. Wing halvess have now been joined. I love this kit, the cockpit detail is pretty good.

All the best.

Tim, I must admit that you did a really nice job of sawing (nice clean and crisp lines) Which saw did you use, could you post a photo maybe to see if I need to aquire one.

Hi Bob
The saw I used is part of a small set from Verlinden. They come on what looks like an etched fret. You need to snip each blade from the fret. You need to acquire a handle as well, I use a twist grip one for my saws. The trick is to let the saw do the work and dont put to much pressure on the blade. A great tool and I feel more confident taking on a few conversions now.
All the best.

Hi Paul.
It's Tamiya acrylic paint XF-71 Interior green [IJN]. I use it as a basis for the interior greens of the spits. It's a bit light and I tend to add to the colour to create the shade I need.
All the best.

thanks tim,

it could be the basis for my exterior colour...i'm doing the aquamarine version of K5054 but cant find a good colour match so i'll probably have to mix my own.

cheers paul

I am getting ready to make a start on the 1/24th Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb, and I am starting with a question. Did the Americans fly Spitfires in combat in Africa with American markings? It seems sacrilegious to do a Spitfire with American markings but I am considering it.

Hi Darren,
At least when you have some Spitfires in British livery in your cabinet already, it should be o.k. doing one in an American scheme.

Below there‘s a pict of a kit I have in my stash which comes with a special US scheme used in Tunisia around 1943. IMHO, very striking with the skull marking of Major Levine on its side.

Osprey‘s book #80 „American Spitfire Aces of World War 2“ might be worth reading for further information regarding this topic.

Cheers and go for it!

Hi All!

Here is a progress pic of my 1/32 Hasegawa Spitty for this campaign.

Fit is wonderful on these older Hasegawa kits and they are not too complicated like some kits nowadays.

Good luck to all.

Regards
Warren

What's your plan with the kit, if I may ask?

Got the wings and fuselage together.

And now the wings are on too

Gotta say this is going together much nicer than the Italieri 109F I've also got in progress.

Wow Warren and Adam, fantastic progress. You both should finish by the weekend . I have just sprayed the interior of my Spit. Just a bit bothered after reading the Alclad II link elsewhere. It was only 2 degrees C in the shed where I spray. Thankfully my better half has allowed me to place the bits painted in the nice warm kitchen too dry, bless her cotton socks.
All the best.

Thanks guys.

First of all keep up the good work on those builds. But remember, don't sweat the details TOO much or you won't finish it..

I am building this one OOB and was thinking of the Vb with the tropical stuff like sand filters and a big, ugly fuel tank underneath. This is only my second 1/32 Spitfire, the first was the old Matchbox Mk22/24. I have not got into the wingtips yet so I am not sure there either.

One thing I can tell you is that it won't be in American markings..

Should have the build finished tonight. If you want to see some more progress shots just go to my Build Blog called 'New Campaign Builds' IIRC. I am building six kits for the six campaigns that started on Jan 1, 2011. Two are painted and just need decalling. The others are not too far off now.

Thanks again!
Warren
