I would like to try this out if I can still come in! I am usually loaded up through the Summer with overtime, but right after the Labor Day weekend, my second job goes into limbo for a few months. I already plan to do some Fall building this year. This year, I am going to the big city to my favorite hobby shops to pick up supplies and a new project or three. (I will also probably make a mail order too.) If I can jump into the Lottery, I would still have three months of build time to finish it. I could also call the hobby shop ahead of time and have them order a kit if I need to.

Thanks,
Dave

Do I enter here, or go back to the campaign page and enlist, or both?

You need to enlist at the campaign page in order to be "officially" entered, but your announcement here can't hurt a bit. Stand by to be noticed by the Jar of Doom...

Andrew, more kudos for your Tempest Mk II. Great silver paint job, and every time I see your build it makes me want to go out and get the SH kit. Would you recommend it, short run warts and all? Kits are very infrequently released with Middle Eastern marking (especially post war prop fighters), which makes it a novelty in my mind also.

Hi Van, the kit is pretty typical Special Hobbies. The injection bits are pretty good, the resin ok but where they join needs a lot of care, decals and pe seem good. Vacform canopy is VERY fragile, good job you get 2 I didn't dare make it open. That said, if you want a Tempest II it is the only one I know of.

Another 2 hours slaving over a hot workbench, decal are ok, messed one up a bit but it is small and doesn't show too much, my fault not the kit.

That spinner and prop change the whole look of the aircraft

Dave,

Your lot is...

#62 UN Carte Blanche, Build any aircraft wearing UNITED NATIONS markings. The UN markings must be more prominent than any national markings. What ifs are disallowed.

This could be a tough one. I have a few models of types that the UN used (DC 9, Dash 8, Otter, Mil Mi 8/17) but no markings. As of right now, I am not finding any UN decals. I will do some more searching this weekend. Luckily, UN markings look pretty easy to make. I did find an article on and one photo of a UN C-47 equipped with powerful speakers to broadcast propaganda to North Korea. Looked like a bare metal finish with a graphic of a bear standing in front of a Grammaphone. Sure would be different, but I would need a lot more info to tackle the build.

I will do some more searching later. I would really like to find an excuse to build an old prop plane. I know some WWII planes ended up with the UN during its formative yearls.

Looking forward to this build,
Dave

I tried to find 'UN decals' but there's a real log jam there on google. It seems the truthers and the illuminati-ists and generation rescue and the militiamen and the freemen on the land and the black helicopter watchers and that whole brain trust seem to have a slight problem with the United Nations???

Awful lot of bumper stickers...

I have the Fly Models UN DC-9 that I intend to use aftermarket decals on. I can send you the decal sheet if you like.

Or, Jbot decals offers a Twin Otter, King Air or helicopters in UN markings.

Minor disaster while I was at work today, a picture fell onto the Tempest

Undercarriage broken, both legs, legs will have to be replaced, engine dismounted, easy fix, forward fuselage split and a chunk knocked out, Stbd exhaust assembly missing, presumed devoured by the carpet monster, if I can repair the u/c, the missing chunk of nose can be re-formed using Milliput but the exhaust....I have just found as I write this There is a chance, but I hate doing work twice.

Not sure how much this helps, but this website appears to sell generic UN logo decals for models. Perhaps you can cull together the rest of what you would need from spares for whatever project you settle on if you can't find anything better.

Thanks for all of the tips on UN decals. I had searched Squadron, FlightDecs, Rollmodels, and the bay, but I totally missed JBot. (Jessica, I really appreciate the offer of the FLY Decals, but I would need to buy the whole kit anyways, as my last DC-9 is already targeted for an important build.)

I found a couple of possible projects in my search. Easy Models has a MIL Mi 17. I know nothing about Easy Models. Are their kits any good? My first thought when I saw UN as my subject was to hunt down a KP or Zvezda Mi 8 or 17 kit.

I also searched Airliners.net. They have quite a few pictures. One of the neat ones was a Yak 40. I don't know if the UN markings are big enough to satisfy the spirit of the build, but it sure is a cool plane.

Now that I have a stack of ideas, I will pick one and run with it. Thanks again for all of your suggestions

Easy models appears to be a brand of Hobby Boss, so I expect that the model will be similar to the Hobby Boss kit.

"Easy Model"s are pre-built and pre-painted as far as I know. I think they might frown on that around here lol.

Wow.....great looking projects thus far in this campaign. I am finally getting my 1/48th Scale Grand Phoenix MK 47 Seafire off the ground in the furtherance of my Contra-Rotating Spinny Thingie assignment.

The interior side wall detail has been removed to make way for the Aires Resin cockpit that came with the kit.

The nose has been removed so the resin powerplant and resin cowling parts can replace them.

I am getting the cockpit parts ready for painting and installation.

Here is the remnants of the "rhinoplasty".

Here are the resin nose replacement parts which are finely molded indeed.

Anyway, hopefully I can work on the cockpit this weekend.

Best wishes everybody,

Ian

Watching for more developments on the Seafire and something UN!
Cheers!

But it would allow me to complete more campaigns...

I didn't realize that E. M. was prefinished. I thought they might be molded in color and slightly simplified. I guess that also kills off the idea of using the decal sheet from one on a Zvezda kit.

I have had a couple hours to really dig in on my searches. There are a lot of planes out there that would qualify. I will probably try printing my own markings for this one, so anything flown by the U.N. will work as long as I can find a kit of it. It can't get much easier than black block lettering. The globe logo will take a bit of work, but I can make that too. (Or get one off of a similarly sized sheet)

Digging in deeper, I have found C-54s, Fokker F.27s, (I have an old kit for this one) An-32 ,(from the Croatian conflict) Bell Huey, (Medical Evacuation from Bangladesh flown in Kuwait with German Medics) Tu 154B (Backdate from Zvezda 154M, or find the old Eastern Express kit?) SA341 Gazelle, An-26, (Expensive A-Model kit) Blackhawks, Il-76, (Including a World Food Project version) DHC-5 Buffalo, An-12, Gates 35A Learjet, 727, 767, Let 410 and several more.

Right now, the Buffalo and the Il-76 WFP planes are really looking interesting to me. I will decide right after the weekend and dig in.

Another option is the Hobbycrap Caribou. The RCAF boxing comes with optional UN markings, if you can find one.

I vote Buffalo. Awesome aircraft for a few reasons.

But let's focus on this one:

Just look at that. What's going on there. A hover-craft landing gear, that's what. That's one serious piece of supervillian engineering and I for one approve of it.

A few years ago my son and I did a Jungly Seaking in UN colours with stripey green and white finish and UN markings. It was converted from a rescue Seaking kit with a new undercarriage and GPMG added. Looked great but a better modeller would have done better
