A few pics of my Bv138 getting shading, masking and finally a coat of paint!

All the camouflage colours 72/73/65 were mixed using Vallejo & Polly Scale paints. They were matched as closely as possible to the Eagle Editions & Michael Ullman colour charts then scaled down to 1/48 scale (10% white paint) then more white paint to simulate fading. I use these colour charts as they allow some variation in colour finish as happened with the full scale paints.
Well hopefully I'll have her finished by 31st
Cheers for now Andy

Afraid to say I won't be making the deadline. Got the base coat of Humbrol 90 sky on over the weekend and it ended up taking 2 coats to get a good covering. This particular shade is very translucent, even over a white primer. So that took 2 days instead of one. Masked out the bottom of the fuselage and wings tonight, always a long slow job, ready for more paint tomorrow. Damn enamels. As much as I prefer them, they can be pain when it comes to drying times.
I have only just noticed on the painting instructions that the lower set of wings have to be painted in lighter shades of slate and sea greys. Wonder why that is? Counter shading of the main cammo scheme perhaps?

Stephen if you need more time to finish don't worry take your time, you will still get a ribbon.

Hi Stephen, I've always thought it was to compensate for the shadows of the upper wings so as not to appear different from the upper surfaces, but it's only my theory.

Richard, that would be fantastic. Another week I can have her finished.
Chris, that was also my thinking. Seems very similar to the idea behind the Caunter schemes applied to British tanks in North Africa. Any areas in shade would be painted a lighter colour and uppers in darker colours to break up shadows.

Lap Man you achieved very believable variation on your tan finish. Is the Tri-Color painted or a decal?

A great looking flying boat, Lap. Just curious, did you post-shade the ribs?
Well done, in any event

Hello Ben
I post shade the flat aluminum with smoke gray and then applied a thin coat of flat clear.

Dear Campaign leader, would it be possible to extend the built a few hours,.. Still trying to finish this bird with its horrible decals,...and It might take me till Sunday.
Thanks
I have heard that very hot water helps to get Roden decals to behave themselves and settle down. Yet to try it myself. I have a few of their kits and knowing what the decals are like has always made me a bit apprehensive about starting one.
Looking forward to seeing it finished though, it's an interesting looking plane.

Well my Bv138 has not made the completion date! It's only 99.5% complete I still have to add a few details to it i.e. weathering, rigging aerial, adding gunsights to dorsal turret Mg131 and also finding the three 'bollards' for mooring ropes which have mysteriously disappeared. Anyway the following poor photos (phone camera problems)give you some idea of the almost complete entry!!
Have enjoyed participating and seeing the excellent entries of all who enlisted to the campaign.
Cheers Andy
