Well another update seems due, but before that, well done Chris your Rex looks really great. Also well done on being the first to complete a kit in this campaign. I am also impressed by the other projects coming along (all a bit quicker than mine!!).

The 'Beast' Bv138 with all the main airframe together and filled and sanded now on with the cockpit interior.

I'll let the photos below speak for themselves, all showing detail added to the kit:-

That is the cockpit sorted, only seats, console and parts of the control column were used from the kit. All details were gleaned from the few photos I had and is only a basic representation of the actual machines cockpit.

Next on my list is the canopies, cockpit and turrets.
The actual turrets are going to be a complete scratchbuild as
the detail in the kit offerings is non-exsistant.

Here's to my next update
Cheers Andy

@Chris - Well done Sir, that is a beautiful paint and weathering job!
@Andy - You must be very pleased with the way the cockpit has turned out - that's the way you do it!

Moving swiftly on then - I'm calling this one done! Before we get to the finished pics, I'll explain how the base came together.

I have used a cheap photo frame, which I removed the glass and the stand from. I painted a sea pattern onto the chipboard base, in Citadel acrylics - dark (regal) blue, dark (caliban) green, some grey patches mixed in, and then a few grey/turquoise highlight streaks. Once dry, I sealed the base with an acrylic gloss coat. Onto this I put the first layer of Vallejo Water Effects (Pacific Blue).

As you can see, it goes on very blue, but as it dries it becomes translucent, as well as shrinking slightly. As it takes 24 hours to fully dry, it took a full week to build up the waves.

The final application to the crests of the waves was stippled on with a silicon baking brush, to give a foamy texture when it had dried, suitable for drybrushing.

Finally, the whole base received a very dry dry brush of white, followed by a little Vallejo foam/snow over the wake, and where the float skims the water. I found this stuff to be too white, so when it was dry, i blended it back to more of the sea colour with a Citadel wash - Asurmen Blue.

Et Voila!

This project was a lot of fun, with a couple of new techniques tried out. Cheers Everybody!

Real sort update today. Finished the hull. Photo etch on as well as the cleats.

Next comes the wing and engines. Right now I have the engines painted and ready for assembly.

More to come...Later

Lee, superb work on the Ekranoplan and the base gives it a very dynamic finish.
Andy, the Bv138 is coming along nicely.
Bruce, looking forward to seeing your finished Dornier.

Mooching in my stash over the weekend for a box of Italeri 1/35 assault rifles, I found this

so I'm back in as I reckon it should be a nice quick build.

Some extra work is needed to make the cockpit and gunners positions a bit more realistic, so I broke out the plasticard to improve those areas. I added a bulkhead behind the pilots seat and some Vickers mags in the gun-pits. Incidentally the kit supplies a pair of Lewis guns rather than Vickers K's, something I've found common in several of Matchbox's British aircraft (notably the Seafox, Wellesley and Swordfish). Someone at Matchbox clearly did not do their homework!

AT this point I also realised that the side windows were moulded solid and needed to be cut out. Luckily they are clearly marked out and took about 10mins to drill, cut and file them out. I'll glaze them at the end with some Humbrol Clearfix.

Next thing was to make up some catwalks from some corrugated plastic sheet under the gun-pits. I used a cutaway in an Aeroplane Magazine special on FAA aircraft as my main point of reference.

I need to look in my spares box to make up the anchor and winch in the forward pit, but besides from that I'm calling the interior done. Not bad for a couple of nights work. I could try and fit in much more, but little will be seen.

Thank you Stephen and Jesper I have some more progress to report.

I have the main wing and the engines built

And I have everything primed. This, of course is just the wing and fuselage. Also primed are all the struts that hold the wing, plus the control actuators, antennas and control surface counter weights.

Andy, the Bv cockpit is looking real good.
Stephen, the Walrus has always been a favorite of mine, I am looking forward to seeing both a/c finished.

The Walrus was one of those uniquely 'British looking' designs that seemed to stay around long after it was supposedly obsolete, still doing a decent job. I've got it's big brother, the Stranraer, in the stash. Hard to imagine they were designed and built by the same people who built the Supermarine Racers and Spitfire!

I've done a little more tonight. I found a wheel from a Churchill tank and what I think was a landing gear leg from some old 1:144 jet to make up the winch and anchor. Not making any claims to accuracy, just making it look a bit busier in the nose. I'll post some pics when it's painted up. With luck should have the fuselage buttoned up by the weekend.

Bruce, I take it your build is the recent Italeri reissue? Might have to look for one of those, I do like the Dornier flying boats. Does it include any beaching trolleys?

Hi Stephen, yes this Dornier is the recent Italeri release. This is actually a re-pop of their old kit. Evidently they refurbished the molds, added new decals and a photo etch set.

Except for some flash and mold slip on the wing strut sprue this is an excellent kit. I have had no fit issues so far

Unfortunately, there is no beaching trolley in the kit. I was told that there is a resin one "out there", but I really haven't looked for it since there is a perfectly good clear display stand included.

I have finally managed to work a little on my Matchbox Stranaer. The main wing assembly is on.

As you can see I have left the top and bottom wing halves of. This will hopefully help me make rigging for this beast. It might end up being a disaster, but I had to try it.

I have managed to apply the RLM 04 gelb for the theater markings and the RLM 65 hellblau for the undersides.

next comes the top camo. I'll just have to wait for the weather here to straighten out.

Onwards with my Bv138, after detailing cockpit now to add canopy. I have decided to show the Bv138 with open hatches below shows method used.

Cut out canopy placed over spare canopy to give it strength when cutting out panels Dymo tape used as guides.

I then added detail to the interior of canopy, sun blinds etc.

The following shows the fixing and filling of the canopy to fuselage.

So now the 'beast' has a canopy all faired in with the side windows to be added at a later stage. The vac-form canopy wasn't the best of fit but hopefully when painted it will look a lot better.
Looking at reviews of other large resin kits I can't help feeling that this HML kit doesn't really offer great value for the asking price of £240.00. Still modelling skills are improved and no-one else does a 1/48 Bv138.
Enough of my griping next time on with the turrets
Cheers
Andy

In any case, that interior looks great through those big windows and Ive never even considered things attached to the underside of the canopy(sun blinds etc.).

Very Cool!

I did exactly that on my Heyford (also Matchbox). Worked fine. I think I need one of those

Finally got the first camo color applied. This is the RLM 72, which Italeri show as being the lighter of the 2 colors. Next comes masking off the splinter camouflage and applying RLM 73.

Tracing, masking painting decals, klear klear etc.

Im building with folded wings, now I just have to build the wing sections without ruining the finish.

Great to know, Andrew. Then there is a chance that I can also pull it off. I have now invested in the thinnest fishing wire I could find.

More to follow soon.

Bryan, looking forward to seeing the Swordfish finished. I have one that I've been thinking of displaying with the wings folded but struggling to get my head around where the rigging lines go.

A brief update on my Walrus build. I finished painting up the interior, made some seatbelts from painted paper and weathered with drybrushed aluminium and a dirty wash. Then I buttoned it all up. Probably not 100% accurate but it will do as not much will be seen when the canopy is on. I'm more than happy with how it's going so far and the fit of the fuselage halves was perfect. Not bad for a Matchbox kit that's older than I am!

Next up, the engine pod and wings.

1:72 Airfix Fairey Swordfish

Successful construction of the wing sections and floats.

and a greedy dry fitting, the dragonfly is starting to look the part even without all the little details.

Stephen, I was concerned about the rigging as well, but there are not any connecting lines between the wing sections and the fuselage so the folded wings don't seem to matter. I will keep them separate to the very end of the build.

Also, I have a question: when shooting the forward facing Vickers .303 machine gun, how did the bullets not destroy the propeller. This is a set up that I think exists on many early planes and I never understood how it is feasible.

Thanks,
Bryan

Here we are again another Bv138 update this time the turrets. Now I'm not sure why HML decided to mould the turret transparencies in two halves, unless the shape was too difficult to mould in one piece! Anyway this gives us the wonderful task of joining two very flimsy halves together. After a lot of deliberation and several unsuccessful attempts (no wonder they give you four sets of turret transparencies) I came up with the following. To my advantage the framing on the turrets is quite wide (quite correctly so) so I decided to use a thin strip of soft metal from a used tube of tomato puree!
I superglued the strip into one half of the transparency leaving a small rim onto which I glued the other transparency half.

I then masked the join used filler and tried to get a nice smooth join which I did within reason.
Then using some masking tape to protect the join, dry fitted them to their locations on the fuselage.

I am not really sure the turret shape is accurate, but without any replacements available, they will have to suffice.

The two following photos show HML's interpretation of the Bv138's turrets.

Not really that accurate, so onto find some photos or drawings of what the turret was really like!!!

Cheers for now
Andy

Hi Bryan if memory serves me correctly during the first world war Anton Fokker designed an interrupter gear for the Fokker Eindecker which basically locked the breech of the machine gun while the prop was in the front of the barrel. See pic below for a basic idea. Synchronization was successfully achieved by the British late in WW1 for the Sopwith Camel and the French for their Nieuports.

Basically, the mechanism blocks the gun from firing when the prop is in front of the barrel. Very cool, thanks.
