I'm guessing it's Operation Torch against the Vichy French, but I don't know the combat totals... I found a note saying an early clash saw 8 D.520s and 4 Wildcats destroyed, but there may have been more.

Merlin your correct,
November 8th-11th 1942, Operation Torch, Invasion of Vichy French North Africa. Carriers involved were the USS Ranger, USS Suwannee, USS Sangamon and
USS Santee. F4F pilots claimed 25 air to air kills for 5 F4F's lost in aerial combat. Another 6 F4F's were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire.

That was a neat question - it certainly had me going through my refs!
OK, here's a "name that plane" for everyone:

Is it a fw 187?
Posted: Saturday, May 14, 2005 - 11:01 PM UTC
Hi Philip and Joe
If I name the country it'll be a giveaway - but I'll give you all a clue that it's not from one of the major WW2 combatants - so it's not an Fw 187.

Hi David
It certainly does around the cockpit and nose... but it's not a Mossie.

Hi David
Well, it was the first combat aircraft designed by this particular country to enter quantity production and served for about 10 years from the late '40s onwards.

Hmmmn...very interesting. I don't think I've seen this one. It looks like the a/c was base on the Mosie, with guns under the bombardier nose and radial engines (Bristol Hercules?). It has circular insignia under the wings.

Hmm, Not combatant Country, nice scandanavian lines, Im going to venture thats its a Saab 18, a plane that entered service in 1944, and was one of the faster twin engine piston types with a top speed of 570 km/354 mph. Ive always been partial to swedish enginnering, considering we have two saab 9-5's sitting in the garage. And there from before they were bought by GM too.!

Hi Jared
No, it's not a SAAB and, before I get taken to task by angry ********ians, I said the country wasn't a major combatant - they declared war on Germany and Japan on 27th March 1945.

Thank you!
Here it is:
A foreign plane was ordered by the RAF and delivered on August 21th 1936...
What was the name of that plane and why were the british experts VERY disapointed when receiving this particular plane!

Sorry Zoomie, it's not the catalina!
In fact, the plane in question is a single engined fighter...
A second hint would be my flag on the left

Sorry defcon1,
It wasn't the MS 405 or 406...
The plane in question was also exported to china...
(now it should be easier!)
