It doesn't look like the standard MiG 23 cockpit.

How about a Mig-15 or one of the export variants?
It's something in between!

Hi Jean-Luc
I think we need to be put out of our misery! :-) Following your not so subtle hint, I'm guessing an updated MiG 21 of some description. The windscreen's all wrong, but this really isn't my field!
All the best

Hi Rowan!
I think you found the right answer! Take a look
here !
Since Gábor's last visit to Armorama was on June 14th we shouldn't wait for confirmation from him. So it's your turn again!

Hi everybody,
sorry for the waiting,
I was out for some holiday in a totally IT-free zone.
Mmh, yes it is (sort of) Soviet technology.
No, it is no MiG-23, and no MiG-15.
This turn took a bit long (my fault), so if there is no correct reply today, I will tell the answer.

Ah yes, I have just noticed Rowan had the right answer. It is a MiG-21 2000, that is a Romanian/Israeli upgrade of the MiG-21MF and Bis. Nowadays these upgraded MiGs have a strong tendency to crash.
So it is your turn! Some British jet, perhaps... ?

Cheers Gábor
I'm not sure how much I guessed right - I'd assumed it must be a modern Russian upgrade. Perhaps that's why all my theories about cockpit colour were no help whatsoever! :-)
For a complete change of subject, have a go at identifying this. It should be straightforward, so there's a bonus brownie point if you can name the aircraft too:

Hi Rowan,
Is it the underbelly rack and external fuel tank fitted to a Me109E?

Hi Rowan,
I reckon it's 'Black 6', 109 G-2 at the RAF museum. *Sigh*..If only she was still flying......

Hi there
I think I have to give it to Martin for identifying the object as per the question - but Harri get's the bonus brownie point for spotting that the aircraft is indeed "Black 6".
Over to you Martin

In 1938 the commander of 111 squadron RAF was J W Gillan. What did he do to earn the nickname "Downwind" Gillan?

Hi Martin
From what I can remember, Gillan made a record-breaking flight from Edinburgh to Northolt in a Hurricane, the flight being called a 'downwind' flight? (Much clutching at straws here!) :-)

That's right Harri, he set a speed record of over 400 mph and the newspapers heralded Britain's "First 400 mph Fighter". The fact there was a 50-60mph tailwind was not publicised although the pilot was given the nickname "Downwind" Gillam by his contempories.

Who can name this little beauty?

Is it an Irbitis I-16? Without the cover of the landing gear. It was a Lithuanian-built trainer/sports airplane.

Hi all!
According to my refs it's a Mikoyan-Gurevitch I-250 (N-1).

Hi Jean-Luc
I think you're right - it's otherwise known as the MiG-13, a mixed-propulsion fighter.
The Irbitis I-16 looks interesting - it'd make a neat little kit!
All the best

Well done Jean-Luc,
You're absolutely right and Rowan gets the brownie point this time because yes, it was also known as the Mig 13.
Over to you....

The MiG does not look bad either. Is there a kit of it?

Hi all!
Sorry for the delay!
Here's another Frankenstein question.
Give me the names of the four aircraft that gave parts to constitute this new "plane"...

Hi Jean-Luc
I'm sure you've picked that port wing to tease me! It looks suspiciously like the subject of one of my favourite kits... an FM special! :-) :-)

Hi Jean-Luc
Just to knock this one back into play... I'm pretty sure I've got the wings and tail sussed, but you've left me guessing about the fuselage!
I'll go for:
Left wing - Breguet 690
Right wing - Bloch 210
Tail - Bloch 174
All decidedly French - which makes me think the fuselage must come from a French aircraft too. The nearest I've found in my refs is the Amiot 143 - but that doesn't seem to be quite right...

Hi Rowan!
It's a perfect answer!
The fact that the planes are all French has nothing to do with the recent results of the World Cup! :-)

Hi Jean-Luc
Really? The Amiot is correct too? :-) :-) I've spent two days looking at every French bomber I've NEVER heard of!
Of course - my first thought was that it wasn't a composite at all! It's so ugly, it could be a REAL French bomber from the run-up to WW2!
Hmmm - I'm wrong-footed now... I'll have to find a question!
All the best

Hi again
One to see who's been paying attention to our walkarounds!
On what aircraft would you find these distinctive aerodynamic fairings?
All the best

:-) :-) :-) I know, I know but it would be unfair of me to answer.
:-X
After our discovery and discussion of those fairing, I've been keeping my eye out for them. None of the three at PoF have them
