That was HARD. I couldn't find a good picture to back up what I had read. I finally found one and that confirmed it.

My question will be coming shortly.

Hello Goldenpony,

The aircraft is actually a mock up of the Bell XF-109 Supersonic Vertical take off fighter. Like so many designs of the time it never made prototype status.

Sincerely,
Brian

Hello everyone,

Here is one thats different. It featured an enclosed cockpit. It was also the last pursuit aircraft to have fixed landing gear and externally braced wings. Originally it had a radial but was replaced with an inline engine.

Hello Jim,

Your correct. Funny how it has more in common (looks wise) with a P-26 than anything else. I do think the inline makes it more fighter like. It's to bad the re-engine did not improve its performance. Any way on to your question.

At first I thought Boeing, then I remembered Curtiss made a bunch of early fighters. After that I pulled out my Janes book, and bingo.

OK, here is my question, what is this? Hint: Be careful!

Fred,

Yes, it is the Lockheed XFV-1 Salmon, very similar looking to the Pogo.

Your up!

Fred,
This was completed by several types. The P-40,P47,P-51, and the AH1 Skyraider all started as piston engine and had a future jet engine installed thruout its career.

Design work was undertaken to look into the feasablity of mounting a jet engine in a P-47 but to the best of my knowledge it never got off the drawing board.
