Today was decal day. RFC/RNAS aircraft don't actually have to be just dull PC10 schemes afterall...just most of the time.
The "Cleopatra" aircraft uses the Eagle Strike roundels, the Alexander RNAS aircraft uses the Eduard kit roundels. Notice the difference in the blue on the roundels. I believe that the Eduard colour is more accurate, the Eagle Strike looks more like the RAF blue used at the start of WW2, i think it's a bit too dark for the WW1 colour.

The first of the 2 Camels is done. B6289 was a Camel of 10 RNAS (same unti as Raymond Collishaw) and was flown by Canadian ace Capt. William Melville Alexander from Toronto. According to Ospreys Camel Aces, Alexander scored 13 victories in Camels and 23 in total...most of the other kills being on the Triplane.
For some reason i rarely feel the urge to weather WW1 models, prefering them to be clean. The Eduard kit probably has the most difficult upper wing to mount of any biplane i've built so far. However, my usual make it up as i go along using my calibrated eyeball worked out in the end (real men don't use jigs!). It's all square anyway.
Hopefully will get "Cleopatra and her Asp" done tomorrow as well.

And here's the second of the pair. B6398 is shown as it finished it's long and successful career at No. 10 Training Depot as the personal aircraft of Maj. E L Foot. At the training depot it was painted with the depiction of Cleopatra and her Asp. It isn't known if the blue was also painted on the upper wing surfaces, but probably not. So i left it PC10.
B6398 had a very distinguished combat career. Starting at 1 RNAS it was flown by S M Kinkead for 6 victories. Then it went to 209 SQN and scored 2 more victories when flown by W R May. The aircraft scored 4 more victories flown by R C B Brading at 201 SQN before it was retired to the training depot and repainted. Well it's a Camel that isn't all PC 10 for a change!

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Michael: For these 2 i used lycra thread for the rigging. I decided to give it a another try after not being very impressed with the method on the Bristol i did earlier in the year. And well, i still don't really like the method much! I really think i'll go back to nylon monofilament through drilled holes from now on.
Terri: Preshading? No preshading was used on these two. It's all postshading, i prefer postshading (with lightened colours) these days as it results in the overall colour getting lighter as you work instead of darker. I feel that most scale models are too dark for their scale...though i know that there are people out there that just think that the "correct" colour is the correct colour.

I don't know. I think it's too general "British vs. Germans". I was thinking of something more like this.
Admittedly, it's kind of hard to tell it's actually a Camel and Dr.1. The ribbon still needs some work.
Update:
Maybe a top down or front view of the aircraft would be better?

I like Tuomas design for it's simplicity .
Gary's up dated one is nice , goes well with the campaign .
Stephens idea of a Camel and a Wolf is neat . Maybe they can have boxing gloves on .

How about just having the tail/rudder of each facing away from each other. Both have pretty distincive tails with the national markings on. And drawn ribbon size would still be distinguishable?

I will try the tails ribbon. Great idea! As for the Camel/Wolf ribbon, I might try that as well although most times I try to draw living things they come out looking like E.T.
Update:
Here is a first cut. I'm not entirely happy with it. Suggestions welcome. I'm not an artist so no worries stepping on my toes.

Hey , Keith ! That is a very neat idea
Gary , looks not to be bad to me . I think we are on to something here . Maybe have a light back ground so the two tails stand out better . What do think ?
Don't worry about your drawing skills Gary , you are far better then me . I would have had something looking like two spoons floating in mid air !
Thanks for the aid and suggestions guy's , this is really great !

I think a lighter background would wash out the Fokker's white tail. I will try changing the color to a darker color.

You are right, my suggestion was too general. However, I would change the background color of your ribbon, since it is too "glaring" now. Try something calmer.

If you were to make the tails fill the space more, with just one pixel of blue at the top and bottom, they could be quite a bit larger. I agree on the blue being too saturated.
Looking good though!

The blue is nice , but maybe a nice soft light blue would work well . Still have the feeling of the sky back ground just not so hard on the eyes .

Made the tails bigger but I think I lost the shape of the Camel tail somewhat. How is the background color?
Tried adding a dark border.
