Ok. Long time to the 109-campaign, but what I don't know about 109's can be used to write a book. Better get started early since I'm aiming for one of the types that are hard to distinguish. Bf 109 G-10/AS (Or maybe U2).

This was flown from East Prussia to Sveden just before the end of the war, and given Swedish flags for test flights. So it will also be finished. However, it is said to have been 74/75/76, so this image is a bit dark I think.

I have got myself a 1:32 Revell K-4, that is reviewed at Large Scale Planes . I have compared that to pics at IPMS-stockholm and have found out the following.

1: I can use the smaller G-6 type wheels from the kit.
2: I shall not use the long bulges on the wings, but propably the small half moons.
3: I shall not fit tank/bomb-rack.
4: I must remove the extra tabs on the K-4 rudder.
5: I must make sure the radio/first aid-hatch is as on a G-6.

Part from that I think I'm good, but now over to you lot. (Especially Steffen, the connoiseur) What have I missed to check?

you mean "know-it all", don't you?

Honestly, I am no expert on these late war types --- or better I am no expert in any field. The G-10 was changed a lot and this subtype seems to be one of those with the larger hood. Note that the transition to the fuselage is different to the K-4 (K-4 with a curve, and "straight" on G-10, G-14AS and G-6AS and there were also different in styles) the whole engine cover looks oval and larger and the chin bulges also look a bit different. I have to check my refs to comment further ... this is just my observations from the pix.

There was a time when Vincent Kermorgant hat a site on Bf 109 versions ... maybe you can try to contact him. Of course check Lynn Ritgers site http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/. I would post this question to the 12 o'clock high board from Ruy Horta or Hyperscale. There is a lot of knowledge and many people also have a lot of earlier threads filed away.

all the best

I am in! Crazy - I was just thinking of such a campaign a week ago when I looked through my stash.

I think I will join with Esau's Bf 109G-10. But I might go for one of the Croatian machines that defected to Italy instead.

Steffen, what decals did you use for your G10 for Ewald? The cowling camouflage looks a little different from what I remember although I am away from my references right now. Do you have a specific picture of that side of the cowling?

Hi Jesper

this is an OOB build using the Hasegawa decals and instructions. The edges are a bit too hard, but the camo is o.k. IIRC my Aztek was pretty much at its end then, so it was masked or painted on. You can find two pictures of that machine in "Wo wir sind is immer oben" by Heinz Ewald pg.149

cheers

Thanks for the comments Steffen. I will make a decision along the way if this is "close enough" for me. I can accept some faults if correcting them might be risky, and reshaping the cowling is such a task.

I've been checking the 109-lair and they have a walkaround of a G-10 there which is encouraging. I'll compare that to my K-4, and if that´s a decent match I'll go with that.

Keep on knowing. The more people share, the more I get to know

****There is something very wrong with this picture. The nose is all wrong for a Bf109 (especially a G-10)

Hi fred

have you had a look at the pix? ... the profile is pretty much correct. IMO the nose curves down a little too much in front of the guns, but thats just a nitpick. What do you think is wrong?

It seems that white 14 has become suddenly interesting in Sweden these days. A new side profile popped up on IPMS-Stockholm the other day. Pic is here I'm not sure which is most correct, but the previous one was scanned from a book, so I guess that's why it's a bit dark.

The fuse is too thick, making it out of scale with the wing. This is why the cowl drops away too steeply from the windscreen and why the canopy looks too tall and the fuse aft of the cockpit looks too short.

Neat plane, but a poor rendering. The link Tony provided is better.

Hi Frederick

Well, it is a profile! You can never trust them. It is an artists impression of some photos (hopefully) of a real thing. Sometimes it is just an artists impression of what another artist had though it should look like, if you know what I mean. in this case it is even worse as you only see a view that your computer rendered from a scan from a book where an artist tried to capture the real thing ....

really, I cannot see why you are bothered, but I understand you say the profile sucks. I think it was just distorted during the scanning or reworking process ...

OTOH I must say, that I am not a big fan of Mr. Weal.

all the best

Whaat? Cmon people it is 109, the "backbone" of luftwaffe! How come we had enough people for P-47, P-51 and 190 campaigns and not for 109 campaign?

Terri and friends, don't despair! Terri: ask Chuck nicely to put it in the debarkation zone. A 109 campaign simply cannot fail, it is per definition impossible!

Hi everyone

I'd deffo be up for a 109 campaign. I think I'd gor for a G6 gunboat. Possibly the hasegawa "Eyeball" kit or maybe the Unimodel kit I have.

Make it happen Terri!

Hi there

I've signed up. It'd be a great excuse to build LF Models' Bf 109V-21

Or, maybe, a Bf 109Z? I found the Planet Models kit in the Stash the other day...

All the best

Rowan
