Thanks guys. You're going to laugh, but I actually feel a lot better about them now.

The raised lines are really fine as you have pointed out. I still haven't looked at the 101 but I think I will be fine with it if I take your approach Hermon, which brings up another question- how do you preshade the panel lines? Do you hand brush or airbrush them?

Completion

Over all the kit had a good fit, surface detail is very good, wheelbays are lacking in detail, and I did not relize it until the end mine came with no option for a raised canopy so i thought about scratch buildig it and then I lost some detail pc's to the carpet monster so I figured the gods were trying to tell me something. So i closed the canopy Thanks for the campaign

Well yes i have popped my alclad cherry. And I figured out what I did wrong and why the finger prints had to be fixed.Because I used black gloss enamel instead of acrylic (alclad recommends for polished aluminum)so next time.No 101 for me I have my phantom build coming up for the cold war campaign

Somebody asked for a 101 ???

Here ya go then . . . . . . .

I took a bit of a break from painting and weathering a couple of other builds and got started on the major sub-assemblies for this one. So far it's going together really well, and the detail in the office and wells looks nice. I'll get some closer pics as I get some colour on them.

I cheated and didn't paint the intake tubes, the call-out is for white, and the bare plastic looks the goods. Unless you stick your head inside the intake you won't see that it's not painted and the seams are still there. So please don't stick your head in there !!

Cheers, D

Yep, found them in the last place I expected, but right where they should be, in the box with the instructions ! Apparently at some stage in the past I was actually organised. Not any more

Bits of progress... I got some foil painted up for seat belts and rigged up some wire to be the ejector handles. Maybe I'll get some photos up tonight.

A little bit of progress here guys, the cockpit is painted and detailed, as are the seats, and they both copped a wash of ultra-thinned black enamel. I'm impressed with the detail on this kit OOB, not quite so impressed with my fine painting skills though !

Hopefully I'll get the fuse buttoned and wings on this weekend.

Cheers, D

Nice work Damian! I'm going to be building one of these as well, and I'm pretty sure that your painting skills are much better honed than my own.

Justin, I just viewed your F-100C feature and it was a good read/photos. Got any tutorials for a heavy handed old gent who would like to learn how to do NMF?

Well it was my first time using alclad so I just followed the general rule of thumb if you can see it it's going to look 10 times more prominent on the finished product.so I just constantly went over the plane wet sanding and making sure everything was smooth and perfect.make sure you give your base coat a few days to dry and use acrylic gloss black for polished aluminum.I used enamel and it stayed soft under the alclad

Something else that will help is to prime with Duplicolor Automotive primer. It has a filler in it that will fill in minor scratches missed during sanding. Another paint to use under Alclad is Tamiya TS-14 Gloss Black. It is a lacquer and holds up well. As Justin said, if you can see it with your eyes, a NMF will amplify things considerably. Tamiya's rattle cans of silver have worked well for me over the years. Mica Silver, Silver Leaf, Gloss Aluminum etc. The dry quickly and produce good results, but it is ultimately all in the prep work. "Q"

According to a note I found, I started painting in July of 1998. I must have packed it back up shortly afterwards as I moved from Georgia to Minnesota the following month. It probably stayed packed up till I unloaded everything into my new model shop in Missouri sometime in 2002. That only lasted a few months till everything was packed back up and we moved back to Minnesota, then on to Washington state. It finally saw the light of day for an extended period when I decided to build it for this campaign.
