Nice Start on the engine, Chris!
Well I´m finished, just have to apply the aerial.
When picking up the kit for the campaign I knew about nothing about the History of the Curtiss P-36/Hawk75 neither it´s role in CBI. While and scrolling the Net I stumbled on a interesting subject with a lot of confusing referrings and only 2 pics I found. So tried to manage that one while I´m still practising different things since this is only my 7th build for a #7-campaign after return to the hobby. Probably finished it a bit too rough...
Some first shots, waiting for a sunny day for outside photos to show.
History, if anyone is interested - quoted from different sources:
"...Curtiss Hawk Monoplanes for China story, the second Curtiss Hawk 'China Demonstrator' was the H75-Q, sometimes described unofficially as an H75-A5. Some sources incorrectly refer to it as being a fixed undercarriage design or modified to have a retractable undercarriage and it has also been confused with the earlier 'Hawk Special', the first 'China Demonstrator', in some references. It was first flown as NX 2208 on 6th October 1938 but delivered to China as the 'China Demonstrator' on 28th November 1938 with the c/n 12898 at a cost of $35,000. Accompanying the aircraft was Curtiss test pilot Bob Fausel together with a CW-21 interceptor NX 19431. The shipping of the two Curtiss designs together has led to some accounts referring to two H75-Q demonstrators being sent to China.
...Hawk Demonstrator. Curtiss began development of the export version of their model 75 early in 1937. In its original form the demonstrator had less power, fixed landing gear and was simplified as much as possible both to accommodate export concerns and to make it suitable for operations from airfields with austere facilities. Powered by a Curtiss-Wright GR-1820-G3 engine (875 h.p. for take off) another selling point for the Hawk 75 was the fact that it could be equipped with a variety of engines.
More than a year later two additional demonstrator aircraft were produced. They bore the designation Hawk 75Q. With its R-1820-G105A engine this version had in excess of 200 more horse power than the earlier demonstrator. This aircraft was fitted with under wing gun pods for cannon. Some published accounts say two Hawk 75Q’s were supplied to China with fixed landing gear but one was converted to retractable gear. Only one Hawk 75Q was involved in official trials in the spring of 1939 and it had retractable landing gear. In fact it was routinely referred to as a P-36.
...also advised that larger wheels (and hence larger wheel fairings) would be installed to accommodate operations from muddy airfields."

Niceeeeeee Thomas! Love the really worn look to the kit you've captured the original nicely. The historical information is interesting to as I thought that the initial demonstrators were all fixed landing gear. Sounds like there were quite a variety offered to the Chinese in an effort to win export sales.

Richard, sorry for the confusion. The question was mainly an appropriate color for NMF, the rattle can is a lacquer I think but the green to be used would be acrylic.
Bob
While I am not familiar with this color I would suggest a test spray on something to see if you like it. If it looks like aluminum to you then go for it. I try to avoid the strong metalic bit and also a too silvery color. If you look at aluminum that has been exposed to the elements for any amount of time it quickly degrades to an almost whitish-gray. If it is laquer based you should be ok going over it with acrylic .
Hope this helps- Richard

Howdy Y'all
Chris: Great start on your Zero. Hope you keep posting pics of your progress.
Thomas: Awesome model. Your research has taught some of us a little more of the CBI.
Take care,
Don "Lakota"

Thomas, Great job on your Hawk! The Chinese markings look really cool. I considered bulding my hayabusa as a Chinese flown example I found pictures of.
I know very little about the Hawk, the history of your demonstrator is very interesting! I had no idea they would make a fixed gear example but it seems logical considering the time and place.

Moving forward with the build I've added more details to the engine specifically tubes between the cylinder heads. I'm only doing the front row as the back is obscured by the front. Assembling the cockpit and I've found the seat is a total fabrication nothing like the original. I've sourced a replacement from CMK that has moulded on belts thereby killing two birds with one stone. The instrument panel has details that should pop with a dry brush and I'll have to build the raising and lowering mechanism for the seat as the seat that's coming is for the Tamiya kit. Should look a darn sight better though. Side wall detail is present though only in the cockpit area. I'll have a look at what can be seen past it and add what's necessary.

Bob, Richard, Nicolas and Thomas: Glad You like the improvement of my little Mohawk!
Bob: Your Hayabusa is coming along nicely!
Chris: Great plumbing work on the engine! The photo etched panel will clearly improve the cockpit!
Thomas: Congrats for Your Hawk. This one is really unique! I have to test Your paint method some time. It looks really cool! Concerning the oval shape of my hawk, I hope to take some photos next weekend.

Chris: Very nice work on the engine. The added wires and now the paint make a huge different. Sure this will turn out great.
Guys, thank you very much for your kind and friendly comments about the Hawk, really appreciate!
Done the aerial and forgot to show the belly...
You can see the stand-hole and 2 sinkmarks in the fuselage as well as in the rear wings I was too lazy to fill; also not known if there were insignias on both sides of the main wings.
As always, a "sunny" outside-pic will follow

More progress to report I've built an air intake for the cowl. I've noticed that the cowl fasteners aren't there so I'll have to create them or scribe them. I'm also building the cooling gills operating gear as they'll be seen because I'm using the open option for the cooling gills.
I've also drilled out the larger trough for the 13.2mm machine that was used in the model 52. As well as put a couple of washes over the motor.

Actually squeezed in some detail work on the engine I've assembled it with the cooling gills and added the exhausts I've also done a little detail painting.

some great models here so far. many of you are way ahead of me in their builds. i am just getting started,
in fact i would like to ask for some help. if anyone can point me towards finding decals for a hurricane in the cbi theater? i really would like to build the recent airfix hawker hurricane in the early part of the war there but can't find decals for that period. i was hoping someone here could suggest where i can find some.
if not then the below p-40 by revell will be what i will make.i had already started recently by boxing off the wheel wells but stopped there. that is the only additions i plan to add besides a resin cockpit by legend. the legend cockpit looks good despite no instructions on assembly and their seat has molded in shoulder harnesses which are not correct. p-36's and early p-40b and c's only had lap belts from the researchch i have done so i will have to remove them.
so again if someone knows where to find hurricane decals for the raf in burma it would be appreciated otherwise this is what i will build for the campaign.

Chris: Great work on the engine and cowling! This will definetely improve the kit.

Fellow modellers, you know I can hardly resist to expand the "showroom" - so yesterday was a sunny day, took some final pics likely in the same positions and as the name is "Demonstrator" ...
... always funny to see how daylight changes the effects
So folks, move on - I'll follow

Engine and cowl are together, need to scribe the cowl just waiting on a template to help with that should be easier to work with as a unit. (I hope) more later.
The two areas of plastic on the rocker covers that you can see are to help it fit easily inside the cowl. As my scratched air intake fouls the rocker covers.

Your engine is way beyond anything I have managed. There is some great detail and the painting enhances the realism. It looks great
There's lots of activity on here. I have made some progress on my Lysander. Will post an update soon
