Lovely progress in this thread! This campaign is really alive!

Don, Bob, Thomas and Joe:
Thank You very much for Your kind feedback.

Joe:
I usually use Tamiya Acrylics for painting. For the Dark Earth a mix of XF-52 and XF-64 was used. The Dark Green is one of Tamiya´s mini bottles called XF-81. For the lower part XF--21 was used. All paints were lightened with white according to the small scale effect. Concerning the underside, I read, that early mohawks had the British Sky color and later ones had a greyish tone. Hope, this will help.

Oliver

thanks oliver. it does, i will take a look at xf-21 for the underside.

Robert Jan:
Thank´s a lot for the little guide! I will have to try this method.

So far,

I am calling my Mohawk done!

But, working with photoshop I reckognized something is missing !

As I had no decal for the saint, I tried to have a more or less steady hand and paint it onto the cowling.

Hope You like it!

Nice to see so much life in this campaign!

Pasi: Very nice! And it's all brush painted? Great!

Robert Jan: Fantastic and crackin' chipping! A definitely a well worn suit

Sal: Good looking Hawk! Are the green patterns brush painted free hand? Wing roots and prop-nose still have quite a big gap, isn't it?

Oliver: Finally great work on the Mohawk with all its issues, converting and modifying. This kit was not that easy. Well done paint job, filters and weathering both the upper side and underside. Congrats for finishing!
See you on ETO...

Oliver, beautiful job on your Hawk! Your paint work and weathering look good and the saint figure you added is a nice personal touch as well!

Progress on my Hayabusa has been a tad stifled by work and weather but it shouldnt be long before im back under way again. We've had some beautiful, warm sunny days... but only when I'm working

Thomas: Great Hawk! I really like the worn metal finish; not too shiny, just the way it should be.

Oliver: A fine job on the Mohawk. Good job with all the details.

Pasi - Stunning Spitfire!

It's been a while, but modest progress has been made on my 1/32 SH A5M Claude. This is one of the "simpler" Special Hobby kits - no resin.
The cockpit is OOB other than drilling out lightening holes in the seat and the sidewalls. I ran into a problem, however, when I put the instrument panel in the "right" place - the "boxes" on the sidewalls fouled the panel, so I subsequently had to chop them in half. No one will be able to see them anyways...

I also worked on the engine, which was a 2-part plastic assembly with a plastic ignition ring. I added the wiring and pushrods and am calling it good. Resin would be better, but the kit parts aren't bad. Once in the cowl, not much will be seen except the very front.

Next, I've worked on some basic subassemblies, and drilled out the exhausts.
The tailplanes were too thick at the root, so had to be sanded down. The wheels didn't fit in the "pants," so had to be sanded down. The cockpit opening wasn't even between the fuselage halves, so had to be sanded....you get the pattern.

Now the build is going to get into a Tenax, putty, and cursing phase, so it may be a bit before another update.

I'm thrilled to see all the different aircraft in this group build. There's a lot of variety, so thanks to all for sharing!

Regards-
Tom

So I've been busy working slowly on the Zero and I've now got the camo on. It's been modulated on the upper surfaces with a lightened version of the dark green I've attached the cowl and engine assembly and I've just started decaling.

This is how she looks right now.

Very nice work Chris! The shading looks quite good and much better after coatig before decaling since the contrast is sharpened.

When all is cured, hope soon, fun begins! Weathering and final details. Canopy scares me off because I never spray painted that before. We will see.

Robert Jan,

The key is making sure the masks over the clear areas are burnished down really well so the edges are nice and tight. Sort of mist on the colors so there's as little pressure as possible behind the paint. Also, this may be really basic, but I always paint the interior color first, then the exterior. That way the interior color shows though on the inside.

Great work everyone!!

Yes the green is hand painted. Dont think I had the nose pushed all the way on, wing I cant do anything about.
But I got the markings on today

It looks more like a Zero now. There aren't many markings on Japanese aircraft just the national insignia in 6 places, the "don't walk" areas over the flaps, the data stencil below the tail and the filler caps for the fuel tanks. So decaling is a pretty fast procedure. Weathered the paint work just a little light chipping to do around the access covers and a satin coat to pull it all together. I have of course got to finish the undercarriage and do some touch up in the wheel wells.

Mike, Tom and Jose: Thank You very much for Your comments!

Tom: The additional work on the cockpit clearly is a fine benefit to the special hobby kit. You did the detail very nice! And the plumbing of the engine looks good!

Chris: The Zero looks good from here! And the engine is a real eye catcher!

Sal: Good progress. Good to see one more Hawk .

Robert Jan: The Hayabusa is awesome!

By the way, I have some problems with my avatar. It is in the gallery, but does not appear here. Any clues?

Actually I'm building a Hayate, code name Frank. But thanks for the compliment anyway.
Busy with panel liners, oils and what is applicable to bring the plane to life. Will be finished end of March for sure.
Planning a display with some basics, also to use for future builds with the same subject. Found some nice wooden panels on a night market near Bangkok that will give it a some what symbolic touch.
Pictures of the process will follow soon.

Kind regards,

Robert Jan

Yes, I am sorry! Probably, I really have to increase my knowledge of Japanese aircraft. Nice progress! This will turn out well!
