russ looking good so far. i am interested to see how much detail and the engineering of the airfix kit.
i am yet to find a pair of tweezers that don't cause parts to fly off into the wild blue yonder,i must have close to a dozen.
i finally got the perfect plastic putty in the mail and was able to proceed with work. i have to say i really like the stuff. very easy to use and cleans up with water.
i used wire to represent the arms that support the slats since the resin ones broke off. i just have to cut them to size and shape them, i don't know how accurate it is but not much of them will be seen anyway. i broke the long outboard filler piece on the left wing so i used what i cut out to replace it as you can see by the different color. it worked much better than the resin so next time i probably just use that instead of resin.
in the mean time i am still having trouble masking and painting the wheels. i tried microscale liquid mask and it won't peel off. it sucked down to the wheel i can't lift an edge to remove it.
what methods does everyone use to paint their wheels?

Russell,
Great to see you moving on your 262.
Joe,
That microscale stuff with either sink into or bind well with acrylic paints. If you're using Tamiya paints you can wash/rub it off with a cloth and some water.
When I do my wheels, I paint them a dark gray then I weather them up a bit with radiating strips in black, gray and brown. Then I dirty up the part of the tire that contacts the ground with some light pigments. Once dry, I dust off the pigments with a brush. It's not a perfect method, but better than nothing. I try to avoid over weathering.

You guys are all making great progress, moving along nicely! I have a P-47 and a '55 Chevy almost finished and once they clear the bench my dual build will be front and centre.

thanks gaz. i usually use floquil weathered black for my tires but my bottle is starting to dry up, this may be the last time i can use it unless i can find another bottle somewhere.
i am talking specifically about masking and painting the wheel. 262 wheels were usually semi gloss black and the hobbyboss wheels molded separation is difficult to see/cut through tape.
for weathering i generally give them a black or dark grey wash in the thread and recessed lines and dirty them up with a dirt wash or pigments before a dullcote to seal it.

i feel ya bob. had the same thing happen with my hurricane build. at least you were able to salvage the canopies. i ruined mine and had to make a vacume form replacement, which i ended up loosing at mosquitocon last year.

Russell:
Interesting choice of kit. How is the fit of this one? I wanted to buy one for this campaign but, I still had the old Revell on my shelf. As there are several flaws on the Revell kit, I have to fill my stash with another 262 for the next campaign .
Joe:
Nice progress on Your 262. Concerning the wheels of a 262 I like to paint the whole wheel black. Than I put on some tamiya tape and press it at the hub´s rim softly with a tooth pick to give it some shape. Subsequently, I can cut it out with a sharp knife. I paint the tires in a very dark grey tone. If there is any profile on the wheels I make som washing with a gull grey color. Maybe this is of some help.
Bob:
Bad masks are always a pain. Nice recovery!
The Revell U3 has some very sharp edges at the bubble-like cowls of the camera, which I filled with putty.
I lost most of the rivets but the edges are much smoother now.
The biggest flaw of the Revell model is the closed landing gear well, although the lower cockpit hub has some fine detail. So, I cut this area out and filled the sides with some plastic sheet.
Fit of the kit is good. But, you have some sink marks on the wings where the engines are.
Schwalbe is now primed and ready for some color.

Gaz yep, it's been a long time coming, but I've finally made the start
Joe/Bob/Oliver It's a good kit overall, but not without it's quirks which will require a little extra effort to overcome to produce a quality model. (But lets be honest: what kit doesn't? )
So, onto the pics of the jet engine assemblies first. As is my habit these days, I have taken to masking off areas where the parts will mate to avoid any unwanted gaps/thickness resulting from using super glue as opposed to a styrene based glue
You really don't see any details of the fans once the outer parts are glued together
This is an example of where some of the extra effort will be required, in this case the panel lines will need filling and rescribing
general assembly layout
suddenly there's not much left in the box
and another area where a bit of extra work will be required to clean up some ejector pin marks in the wheel well
None of the above issues are a deal breaker in my opinion, and overall the shape seems correct to the Mk1 eyeball
more soon

Russell, are those double panel lines on one side and only one on the other of the engine nacelle? You do have some work ahead.

Hi Russell,
Good to see progress... Though it looks like a tough kit to master.

Bob no more difficult than any other kit. It's really just a matter of filling and sanding the seams then rescribing, which would have to be done anyway on any other seam...
Gaz thanks Gaz... The kit has its quirks, but I don't think it will be any more work compared to any other kit

Great to see progress reports coming through from quite a few entries here. I'm certainly looking forward to getting back to my dual build very soon.
Enjoying a quiet bourbon and a random Google tonight I came across a couple of images that I haven't seen before.
Cheers, D

Russell: Thank You for the report on this kit!
I got some color on my Schwalbe this weekend. Decals are on too. The decals did not work very well with Micro-Sol. Can this media get old? As these birds did not see much operations I weathered is only lightly.

Oliver, that looks great! The underside weathering is particularly nice!
I've never used Microsol. I'm using 4-year old Mr. Mark Softer, and it works fine.

I said to myself: not another Me262, let's not join this campaign... but I am weak and I have been following this thread for a while and you are doing a great and I am jealous. So here we go.
I am following Russell with the Airfix 1/72 Me262A.
I was working this weekend on the cockpit and dry fitting the main parts. Cockpit is really simple and the fit is good in general, far from perfect, but the join between engines and the wings is diabolical. We will see...
Carlos.

Hi Carlos, hopefully I can do a bit of trail blazing for you and light the way... I'll post pics soon, but I believe there is an easy fix for the wing and engine join... A bit of trimming is required to enable the engines to snug down...
Also, I'm of the opinion that the 2 parts that make up the cockpit cylinder shouldn't be glued together before inserting into the fuselage... I think the top piece should be glued to the fuselage first...
Let me try it out and I'll post up some pics soon so you can see

Russell, thanks for the advice but look what I have just glued!
I am quite pleased with the very simple cockpit but, you are right, it doesn't fit easily on the top. I will crowbar it tomorrow...
I have trimmed the engines and the wings quite a bit already. My challenge now is going to fix the engines straight and fill the gaps, but please put the pics as it may help a lot of people,
Thanks anyway,
Carlos.
