Looks like we'll have a squadron of Typhoons, cool!
I don't know Andy, how about the Whirlwind then? Was it used for tank busting?
"After initial use as an escort fighter, it was relegated to convoy patrols and eventually as a "Whirlybomber" flying low-level "rhubarbs" with bombs and cannons against targets of opportunity in France."

Hi Jan,

I love the Whirlwind but with this aircraft you have two problems.

1. Pretty rare in 1:48 scale - Pavla do one in 1:72. Other than that.....Airfix anyone?
2. I looked into these when this campaign started but really they only seem to be classed as 'fighter bombers'. Their guns weren't potent enough for tanks and I have never seen a picture of them carrying rockets. Of course bombs could be used but 'dumb' bombing was (and still is) woefully innacurate.

Looks like the whirlwind wasn't used in the tank busting role, but i may look to add one to the stash in the future.

Still searching for mossie markings

Later on they flew..... "Just a bit of a fly-around-and-shoot-what-you-can 'sorties'...."
I've just found a Swedish pilot that flew the Whirlwind Pilot Officer Ralph Otto Gustaf Häggberg. He flew for No 137 squadron. So I'll be getting one later to build his machine. Unfortunately he was shot down and killed and body never found......
Sorry for the slight post fellas.

Its the Hasegawa 1/48. Most likely OOB with the exception of Decals. I have an Aeromaster sheet.

Hi all!

I have decided on the Revell (Hasegawa) Henschel Hs-129 in 1/48 for this campaign.

I do have the Ju-87G "tankbuster", but that´s in 1/32 and as I have three other Campaign builds in this scale (F-14 Tomcat, MiG-19S, OH-58D Kiowa, 1/35 really) I wanted something smaller to build!

I will do the Hs-129 in the RLM79 sand yellow with RLM80 Green blotches over RLM78 light blue with white theatre markings.

A bit unusual and colorful scheme for this aircraft.

Cheers!

Hi Lee!

Yes that´s the Classic 1/48 kit.

It was quite easy to build, and it was my very first multimedia kit!
Fit between nacellles and wings weren´t the best and required some filler.

Note that If you assemble the whole wing as a subsection (as the instructions says), You´ll be in trouble when you join the wings and fuselage!

I recommend you to assemble the wing this way instead;

1) mid wing lower section to fuselage, be sure to get it straight and square!
2) upper outer wing panels to lower section and fuselage
3) Nacelles to upper wing and inner mid-section
4) lower outer wing panels to upper wing and nacelle outsides

This is true with all CA kits with three- or five section wings!
I used the same method on my SM-79, i described the way I did it in the feature i wrote.

With the modified order and some (LOTS!) of dryfitting, you can get a really good join without any filler.

I had lots of fun with this kit and the result was really worth the work.

Cheers!

Hi Jan:

Checking the decals I have I found the following.

For the AC that wears - FT P (RB222) - I need a tear drop canipie that I don´t have.

The letters of the decal set - HH U (MN353) - that I have are in light blue and I believe it´s an error and I have the same problem with the canopie for this AC.

So if you don´t mind I would like to build the - HH N (EK319) -

Do you have decals for another Typhoon of the same Sqn ? That would be great.

I don't think that I have any decals for a Typhoon Carlos, need to check. Otherwise I was think of buying the code letter separate like these below.
Can maybe buy the same decals and just change the codes....

Here's HH*W that has the car door canopy, is this one any good.

Here's a Typhoon from 175 squadron.

@VonCuda: welcome on board. I am guessing you building a Stuka? Or have you found something else German with big cannons under the wings?

Indeed Jesper! A Stuka it is and she's on her way to my house by express mail as we speak. At my work pace, with any luck I should have her ready for final inspection no later than 10 minutes before the build deadline. :-) :-)

OK Jesper, I'm going with the Ju88P-1 for this campaign.

Well, if it is armed with bombs I would allow it.
A) It was used in the free hunting role and would surely have attacked panzer if it came upon it.
B) It was used "down low" for ground attack.
C) It had the means to knock out panzers if it is armed with bombs.

So if any of you want to enter a Whirlwind it will be fine.

@Phantom II aka show off :-) :-) Good choice. I will also be making the Hs 129 B-2, but in Eastern front markings. It will be very cool with different camouflage schemes and markings for this aircraft. Jolly Rodger is doing the late war B-3 version with the 75mm gun.
Do you have squadron/signals book on the Hs 129? It is pretty good with good information and colour profiles. I also have a polish book, but can really only use the pictures, colour profiles and the drawings. My polish is a little rusty

@Blackwulf: Great choice! Looks very brutal with the big gun protruding from under the nose of the aircraft. The Ju88P-1 was my second choice along with the Stuka. I might just still have to build a Stuka for this campaign. I am getting the Stuka itch :-) :-)

Hi everybody.

I got a Revell 1:72 Grumman Hellcat thrown on me around christmas and thought it could be a good object for starting my airbrush training.

However, it has a rocket and bomb load, so I thought I'll try to sneak it in here as well. Could it be that the Japanese had armour left at the end of the war, so that this was really used as a can opener?

Jeps, that would do fine. It might have been used more on bunkers, fortifications etc. However, the japanese had tanks and if they were spotted they would surely be attacked by your Hellcat. The argumentation for allowing it is pretty much the same as with the Whirlwind:
A) It was used for the ground support role and would surely have attacked Japanese armour if it came upon it.
B) It was used "down low" for ground attack.
C) It had the means to knock out panzers if it is armed with bombs and/or rockets.

Just remember that you should build the Hellcat with bombs and/or rockets. Good luck with your airbrushing. I am already looking forward to see those teeth bite into some japanese armour

Allright then. Count me in

She'll be sporting a sixpack of rockets, probably two bombs and a three-tone blue paintjob. I sure hope to get the teeth in order too.

I guess I'll start as soon as my anger over the blackish blue colour of the styrene has cooled off.

Three tone blue camouflage scheme. Very interesting. Looking forward to that one.

Hi Jan:

So to resume, I understand that we will buil Typhoon from the same Sqn., and this Sqn. is 175, right ? I will go with HH N and you with HH W or I missunderstood something ? It would be great to build a pair of Typhoons of the same Sqn.
There´s also Tigerbait who wants to build a Typhoon but don´t know of what Sqn.

Regards.

Carlos and Jan,

I haven't decided on a squadron yet. i actually haven't even broken the seal yet. :-)

I cked my decal sheet and I think 181 squadron is the one I'm goint to do. I don't have any markings for 175 or I'd do one of those along with you.
