Rowan. I think it looks great. To me, the effect is very realistic.

Thanks Carl

Scary thought!: It's still only January - and I just might manage to batter this kit into shape fairly soon! That's all I managed for the whole of last year!

All the best

Thanks,

I call Bloomington home.

(Got to do some detailing on the oleo struts this morning). It looks like this project will take several weeks. (maybe even a month or two)

Any suggestions on aftermarket decals? I've had some mixed results with Tamiya decals lately (I use Micro Sol decal setting solution).

Welcome Fredrick. With Tamiya decals I have had good luck with Mr Mark Softer from Gunze since the Tamiya decals tend to be on the thick side.

Eagle Cal makes some great sheets for A7/A8 Wurgers

Wurger time again! It's not as easy as it might seem to fit the time to build two planes together, even if we're only 2,5 men.

"I'm going back to armour after this" says Tomas. "Planes have insides, but tanks have only outsides!"

I got a little bit ahead, but then again - cockpits are my favourite part.

Luftwaffe one efter priming, preshading and yellow patches. I should have masked the outside boundrys for the yellow, because it shines through the first layer of bottom blue.

RAF one got primer too yesterday, so next time it's time for decisions. How much should the luftwaffe paintjob and markings shine through the RAF repaint.

And juniors J 37 Viggen rolled on as well. It's a huge beast compared to a 190 in the same scale.

I'm on my way with this one. Oleos, as well as the finishing touches on the cockpit. Its amazing how some of the most straight forward stages of a project can be the most fussy. Getting the PE replacement hood for the instrument panel in place was surprisingly fussy.

**** Das stimmt. Trotzdem, hab' ich immernoch Schwierigkeiten...

**** Many thanks. I'm still getting the hang of this forums upload methodology. Compared to other sites/forums its a bit byzantine.

I'm looking forward to getting to the painting, but as I just had a careless disaster in the closing stages of another modeling project because I was rushing things a bit too much, I'm going to take my time on this one!

Cheers,
Fred

I finally got started, finally. Nothing to show yet, I just sprayed the sprues with the RLM 02 and Schwartz-grau. I hope to get the cockpit done by Monday.

Rowan, excellent looking camouflage for the 190. A very unique looking bird.

I have made a little progress on my A3 Wurger. Next is the painting. I am going for the JG2 bird with a very straight forward camouflage scheme with very little mottling.

OK fellow Wuerger Aufbauern...

I'm approaching a part in the project that I've shied away from in models past and I need some suggestions in facing my fear.

I'm prepping the Canopies for final assembly and painting. The PE fret has some wonderful latches and handles to be installed on the glazings. In years past, fearing crazing or clouding the plastic, I simply left these bit off. Having seen well detailed canopies, the effect is stunning if pulled off well.

I've heard that prepping the canopy with a coat of Future reduces the chance of fogging. Is this a part of the project that I should even risk using CA? Would Microscale Liquitape give me a secure enough bond that I won't be pulling my hair out as bits fall off? Should I do the detailing pre-or post-painting (obviously pre-painting seems sensible but...)

Any suggestions from those with experience at this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Fred

Hi Frederik, welcome to the campaign.

I would stay away from normal CA. I use Gator Glue. It acts a little like white glue although the bond is much stronger and it dries a bit quicker. Most importantly it does not fog on clear parts. Highly recommended!

I've started my 190 tonight. Decided to put the Edward kit back in the box and go with a Hasegawa 190A-3. Nothing special, completely OOB with kit decals. I'm gonna wait until she's done and then post in progress pic's and finished pic's all at one time.

Well so much for waiting till I'm done. I went ahead and started a build thread in the WWII forum. Should be ready for paint by the weekend if I can find the right paints.
BTW, Merlin, your 190 is just tooooo cool!

Well fellow travelers,

File this under the "Duh, I could have had a V8" realizations. I'm doing the canopies right now and my current kit comes, to my pleasure, with masks. I've started collecting masks for different projects in the cue, but here-to-fore have relied on the old fashion masking tape. I remembered someone on another forum thread asking about "re-using" masks, much to the bemused ribbing of the other posters, however...

... in a way he was on to something. As I carefully cut out each mask I was left with the backing of the mask after application. A perfect template. I then decided to try and address a canopy issue that always vexes me on open cockpits: that is that frames are usually only painted on the outside. I made duplicate masks using the backings as templates then marked and saved the backings in a zip lock to use in future FW 190 builds. With the duplicate masks I have masked the inside as well as the outside of the canopy. As soon as I finish it I'll post a pic to see how it turned out.

Cheers,
Fred

Okay guy's I have some up-date pic's of my build so far . Man it's been a long time since I did a WW2 kit . I did have some fit issues and don't know if it was me or the kit . ( It's very tight ! ) Taking in account that on German aircraft panels did always match up . I have some seems to scape and clean up then I can shoot the primer followed by pre-shading . I did lose one of the rudder pedals some where out there in the great carpet wonder ! Seat belts were added in the cockpit , few more light washes to follow .

Next I will start on the resin engine replacement from CMK .

more to come soon ..........................

Looking good so far Terri--I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in your rudder pedal misery. I was working on my cockpit last night and was bending the P.E. metal for my rudder pedal and was sure I had everything under control until the P.E. gremlin flung it into the carpet abyss. Luckily, 45 minutes later, work light in hand and dog staring at me like I'm losing it, I found it.

Terri,

That Dragon kit looks really nice (esp the wheel wells). At the rate you're going, its shaping up to be a sweet build.

On a related note (if just). I spent a lot of last evening (well after watching the first season of 30 Rock) doing color reference work for my A-8. Conventional wisdom, the instructions, and my old Monogram Luftwaffe color reference has the wheel wells as RLM 02 gray as well as the oleo struts.

After looking at a variety of color photos of both reproductions, untouched originals, as well as restored FW 190s and have noticed that while the struts are pretty consistently rendered in RLM O2 that the wells on some examples is more of a gray/green almost olive color.

The closest I've gotten on my palette was blending 1 part RLM 02, 1 part Model Master dark green, and a drop of flat black.

Am I on the right track? have others noticed this or is it just my color monitor?

Mmmmm Terri. Monoplane fighters! Arn't they sweet?

'Nuff joked, I'd say that German covers didn't allways match up. I have no pic at the moment, but on the 190 I would say that the top gun cover often had floppy front end corners. The round corners that is.

But it's obvious that you got the hang of these too. Looking forward to the rest!

Hey there. I just finished my FW-190A and wanted to enter it into this campaign. Can I do this? I have some additional pictures to post and wanted to know if I could do that here? I don't want to duplicate postings! Thanks. Russell

Thanks guys for the kind words .
Frederick , it's not the dragon kit . I went with the Accurate Miniatures kit which is a re-boxing of the Eduard kit . molds are showing wear , flash around all corners and miss match parts . So lot's of clean up needs to be done .

Ok Terri. In that case I say "ladies first" and stick to Tamiya.

It's time for another session tonight, so hopefully there's an update on the Luftwaffe-RAF twins soon.

Gee, that was a quickie Terri. I thought the ranch was a while ahead. Anyway, good luck in Texas but remember - even a dream job has it's grey days . The main difference is that the sunny days are a lot sunnier ! You can take that from a motorcycle engineer!
