that question is not really easy to answer. Of course ther is the direct translation "Flügelmann" but historical there are many more terms.

Neil will tell you more about "Kaczmarek" (thats what he called his website). Then there is the name derived from the tactical formation: "Rottenführer" and "Rottenflieger". In eastern Germany (LSK/LV der DDR) the leading a/c was called "Führender" and the other "Geführter" ... and I bet I forgot some

I have airbrushed the main fuselage colours on my build and will have pic's posted soon , almost done the chopper I'm working on which I hope to have wrapped up this weekend .

Will I be building the oldest kit?

I've taken an old Hales/ Hasegawa kit out of the stash. I think it dates from the 70's. It was one of several bagged kits that I picked up a few years ago.




I've started with a scratch built cockpit (used PE parts as a template which I'll use on the next build). I think I'll tone down the PE seatbelts a bit.



The instructions show how lacking in detail the kit was.

Lots of good info in this tread. I never thought that the spend shell cases were kept in the aircraft. But that makes sense as the metal was a critical scarce material during the war. I know tank crews also kept the spend shell cases in the tank if there was room, so makes sense to do the same on aircraft.

Well I just had a huge miss-hap with testors acrylics once more and had to strip the paint back . I have no luck with that paint brand so now I will use Tamiya's paint line .
However what would the colour matches be ? I do have them in oils but I rather use acrylics .

Please HELP !!!!!! I really would like to have this one finished up soon !

Terri, i sort of know how you feel. I've had no great success with any acrylics except the 2 Japanese brands Gunze and Tamiya. And i can't use enamels, so i don't know what i'd do if they stopped importing the Japanese paints...

You probably know the site www.ipmsstockholm.org ? They have good colour conversion charts for German RLM colours. It gives mixes for 74/75/76 in Tamiya paints as there are no close enough matches straight from the jar. If you need RLM 02 the Tamiya XF-20 Medium Grey is a good match.

However if you can get Gunze paints where you are, then i'd just use them. They work the same as Tamiya paints and they have almost the full RLM range ready to use in jars without mixing.

Thanks Andrew , I had the same problem when I did my D.Va ( think I would have learn't the first time ) I did respary the blue using tamiya and went nice and smooth ! now just need the Rlm 74/75 . I should have left it well enough a lone . Had the three colours on , but I need to do some touch up and that's when things went wrong big time !!!
I even tried different ratios with paint and thinner and still ended up with the same results .If I had these colours in pollyscale this wouldn't have happened .

Once agian thanks for the info Andrew . I had the paints on hand and respray the colours , just waiting for things to dry up , in the mean time I start with the resin engine . Over the next few days it's getting all the push rods and oil lines in place and then the weathering .
As soon as the Gallery is up and running I'll post pic's of the progress on which I have done .

Well got my airbrush going last night. And threw some paint at the Dora.
It wasn't so bad so I tried my hand at mottling. Made a bit of a balls up of
it. Too much pressure, too much paint, too big mottles and too close.
Next time I'll try to get it right on paper first before commiting to plastic.
Touched the RLM 76 up a bit to get rid of the worst of the overspray,
I'll give it a light sanding to even the surface then on with the future for decalling.
Colours aren't right either tamiya olive green and khaki for 82/83.
Also I used water rather than isopropyl as a thinner and the paint didn't
behave as well. Lesson learned.

Any tips or comments to help me appreciated. Picture clickable to

On the plus side I did get tenax from the LHS and it works a treat for gluing canopies.

Well Jaypee , I can honestly say it looks far better then my . It's a first for me on doing this type of paint scheme . I still have to spray the mot , and I read some where of punching holes in a sheet of paper and spraying through that to get a uniform pattern . Haven't tried it but will on some scrap first . If you used tap water of thinning it doesn't work because of the mineral content in the water . should have used distilled water. I as you learn't this a long time ago . Looking forward on the rest !

Some more progress on my A8:


Although I've still got to pick out the details in the cockpit, I'm pretty much ready to close the fuselage halves. After receiving the cockpit set, I decided to the use the resin cockpit rear shelf for this kit instead of the PE part from the Eduard A7 set, the parts were much easier to use this way round: no cutting required on the D9 with the etched part, and with the fuselage already cut up for the vac-form canopy, the resin part was an almost drop-fit. (not that big a surprise, it is meant for this particular kit after all...)

I've also made a start on the Academy D9: de-sprued most of the parts & cleaned them up, glued the wing together and worked on the cockpit. Here's the parts of the 'pit ready for priming.

I used some parts from the A8 cockpit set to spruce it up: PE rudder pedals, canopy crank (on the right cockpit sidewall), instrument panel, control stick (combined with the base of the kit part and a short length of styrene rod) and seat. I also made a simple throttle handle and map case from styrene rod & sheet.
Yesterday I shot a coat of grey primer on them. Next it's time for the RLM66.
(Hmm...should I allow myself get lazy and use Eduard's pre-painted seatbelts or paint up the harness coming on cockpit set fret...? )

What do you think, would it be best to cut the hole in the instrument panel coaming for the gunsight with the fuselage halves glued together or separate? With the cockpit locators cut a bit, I should be able to fit the cockpit module in place afterwards.

To replace the kit decals I'm going to order some more Eagle Cals. I'm currently leaning towards Hans Dortermann's mount on this sheet.

That big radial exposed is going to look great.

Found these little beauties for mottling.
not sure i'll buy them, £4 at hannants, seem easy enough
to make myself though. should give me a helping hand with mottling.

Wow! This seems to be a spring of work, so I've decided that Armin Fabers Fw is finished. I went low on weathering, because I judged his captured plane to be - right or wrong - quite not so much flown as most were.



I'm frankly not sure about the shades of paint, but I like the result. Maybe the sun, that looked so right when shooting the pics, was to hard, but that's alesson for the future.



At this poing I'm not so annoyed by my mottling as I were before the decals came on. I mean, if I can do a "never mind about precision" about preshading, the same thing would apply here too. My next LW-mottle will be made with less precision when spraying, and hopefully it will look even better in the end. But of course, I will never beat Ayhan

That's it, and if you find the whells askew - I'll wait with correcting them until they're knocked off. Fragile bummer this'un.

Mike, your Dora is nice too. You even managed to get the plaqard on the headrest to stick. Mine just took off to Carpetland.

It's a nice touch with the rudder a bit off. It breaks the symmetry a bit, just so there is some life to it.

I'm getting ready to mount the engine , but before I do that I need to know what was the colour of the inside of the cowl , where these bare or were they painted RLM 02 ?
