@ Justin I guess we are all waiting on...Fred?

@Mark the wheel wells and doors were painted zinc chromate green on pre-D "Stangs. On some aircraft an aluminium plate was attached to the doors covering the path the tire took up into the well. Why? DIIK Probably to strengthen the door, or prevent wear.

About the time the D-5 came on the scene the wheel wells where no longer painted at the factory, which is to say if you see it on later models it was done in the field

So, the short answer to your question is...who knows?

My only recommendation is (as usual ) Always check and double check your refrences

Hmmm, one of the F-16 prototypes crashed because the nose gear got trapped in the wheel well after a touch and go into a high G climb. The wheel was still spinning as it retracted into the well, and the G-forces had a field day. Wonder if a few hot shot P-51 jocks had similar problems?

Lucky me. I'm building Bud Anderson's P-51D Old Crow (III?). There might be tons of photos for it (with my luck showing both green and NMF doors).

Always do mine in the green.mostly because the whole interior of the plane was painted in chromite green to protect the metal.stands to reason the wheel wells would get the same treatment

Hi Everyone,

I have created a gallery for this campaign. Due to pressure on the gallery, I have created it as a feature.

We are anxious to see your models. I ask that everyone send me your favorite photo of your build; if you can't decide which, send no more than three.

When I post the pix, it will be watermarked with Aeroscale and also credited to you. Please include in your submission if you want your credit to be your name or your Aeroscale ID.

Looking forward to it!

I have created a gallery for this campaign. Due to pressure on the gallery, I have created it as a feature.

I didn't realise there are any pressures on the gallery? apart from the fact that when you post a picture it takes up part of the users allocated space.

Would it not be easier setting up the gallery as normal and if there are users worried about their space remaining they contact a staff member to have the photo uploaded (as staff have unlimited space) or instead of uploading images to their person areas and the campaign gallery just up load them to the campaign gallery and link from there.

I just feel that this maybe the wrong way to go for the following reasons:

1. Some people may miss out on their ribbon, as campaign leaders use the gallery as a way of seeing who has completed the campaign (rather than trawling through pages of threads)
2. Some people post their finished picture as soon as they finish. if they have to email it then they might forget or put it off and then they miss out on their reward.
3. When does the feature get published? when the campaign finishes and all the pictures are collated? (if they've all been sent in). Surely the staff have enough on their plate with out more work being given to them?
4. Space may not be an issue for some now as Subscribers get additional storage space.
5.If the current method works (and has done all this time) then why change it?

Just my thoughts and I'm sorry if I've put anyone's nose out of joint

Got the fuselage glued together just the other day, now I'm trying to smooth out the seams. Looked into smoothing out the wings before I got started there. Come to find out this kit is so screwed up that the fuselage has recessed panel lines and the wings have raised ones????

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to announce that I seem to have slain the gallery gremlins and this wonderful campaign now has its own for you to upload to:

http://gallery.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php?cat=25905

To relieve stress on the gallery I ask that you limit your photos to one or two, and if able, that you size your photos to not exceed 600 X 450 pixels.

I am in for this campaign. A late entry, but I still feel confident that I will make the deadline. My kit is the Tamiya 1/48 Korean War P-51D. I am planning to build it as the Buck Eye Blitz, but I might change my mind later. The shark teeth are very attractive

More to follow when I get started.

Jesper, I hope you have more luck than Sam did with the decals. she went for the Sharks Teeth but every time a decal went near the water they just broke up even after a coating of microscale decal film

Ooooohhhh... sounds very nasty, Allen. I will test some of them first.

Otherwise I need to get myself some aftermarket decals. I do not even have another kit in my stash to steal some decals from.

Thanks for the heads up.

Hi, I haven't been a member for long but just enrolled on to this campaign.
Despite my attempts to offload it, I am stuck with a 1/32 Hasegawa P-51D, which isn't a particular favourite kit, even though the aircraft is. So I am going to attempt a conversion to a P-51B, with a rear seat and twin Malcolm hoods, as used by the 20th FG of the 8th USAAF, aircraft named 'Bond Baby'.
Why? Well I do have the Trumpeter 1/32 P-51B but would rather not 'wreck' that lol.

Welcome to the site and the GB Robert

You have a very interesting project there . It was along time ago published in Fine Scale Modeler there was an article on coverting a 32 scale mustang into the B model . I believe he used the Revell kit for the conversion .

The hase kit does have many accu..issues . Looking forward to this

Nice to have you here as well Jesper ! Just wouldn't be the same with out you

Thank you for the welcolm Terri and Jasper.

I do intend to use the Revell spine on this project, and will use the canopy from same kit as a template to mold my own. Markings will be a mixture from spares box and hand painted. I didnt see that reference on the conversion you refered to Terri so flying by seat of my pants on this one, but at least it uses up that unwanted kit. I'll start by getting my books out!

Count me in with a couple 48th scale builds. First off a B Model with lots of superdetailing and aftermarket stuff and an A Model with the same deal. Both are Accurate Miniatures kits. We'll see what happens.
