OMG! I've just found the sexiest Bush plane EVER! Beech Model 18 on floats! Encore produce a kit of the C45 Model 18 now can I find a set of float conversion?

Khee Kha do float sets in 1/72. If you contact Lars, he'll tell you which type of floats you need.

Are we getting two for the price of one Luciano? Or are you just going to pick one?

Jess, how do you know all these sources for obscure parts offhand??! Your handle should be encyclopedia britessica.

Incidentally, are you in a part of BC that sees much Bush Plane action? One tends to picture a one-room cabin with a pot belly stove and modelling bench on a crystal lake somewhere.

Ray you'll get one for sure but may end up with two or even three depending on time, the Corsair above will not be the usual US Navy or British beast but a Hondurian Air Force machine from the 'soccer war'

This may seem like a very silly question, but can we bring the start time forward?

This is the kind of bush plane action we get in our neighbourhood:

Home is not so much a one room cabin on a crystal lake as a small apartment halfway up a tower. But we do have some nice water hereabouts. Much of it falls from the sky...

There'd probably be people who'd not be able to make it if the ending date came forward too. So unless Tomcat is willing to overlook the six month rule, I doubt we can. But you can always petition him.

Jess, I'm jealous much. I love the vee on the sea. Much nicer than the GTA. Except... well isn't it where people who forgot to take the ferry end up:)?

Okay so Lars doesn't have the correct floats but does have suggestions as to where I can get something at least suitable for the conversion. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me! This should prove interesting for us all (but mainly me!). Anyone want a build log started so I can chart just what I get up to?

Q: What's the best way to see Toronto?

A: In your rear-view mirror.

Build log it for sure. Such an unusual and interesting subject. Be a change from the usual Luftwaffe fare.

Hi Warren it'll be a while before I have everything together anyway and I hadn't planned on doing anything till the campaign actually starts. But I need to get everything sorted as soon as I can so I can be ready to jump right in when the time is right. But thanks for the reminder.

I thought that I would add more interest to my entry in this campaign by having a vote for the kit to build. Cast your vote for the racing plane you want me to build.

Is it the...
1.) Travel Air Mystery Ship
2.) Gee Bee Racer
3.) Curtis Racer

Hmmm.. A lottery of sorts within a lottery

I vote for the Gee Bee

We see lots of Gee Bees, and the Mystery ship is really not that much of a mystery, so how about the Curtiss?

Background information about my build. After QCA was bought out by Pacific Western, their last Stranraer was left to rot behind a hangar, and was rescued by a particularly optimistic group who had hoped to turn it into a firefighting aircraft. They rolled it on its beaching gear from Sea Island to Abbotsford where it was totally rebuilt. Lacking the money it would take to tow it to the Fraser River at Mission, they decided to fly it back, so they knocked together a dolly and found a pilot to fly it.

The fire fighting deal fell through, and a few years later the RAF museum rescued it from the scrap yard.

Warren, my vote is for the Curtiss Racer, with rigging, of course.

Good choice, Jessica. But if your doing the Matchbox kit, you may want to stock up on milliput.

And since we are doing pictures! My Tri-motor arrived in the mailbox today:

I've had a hard time with resin kits in the past, but, this one has me excited. It really does look like a fine offering. I may even take enough photos and do enough of a blog to write up a review. I like it that much.

For now, it remains in the baggies until start time arrives.

I'd sure hate to have to land that beast. The only thing you'd see is that great huge plank of a wing with fuselages and tails on either side. Lord help anyone who gets into the way when you're on Final because you're not going to see them until after you hit them.

Much like landing a Stearman really, and here I speak from experience. At least with that B&V you would be a long way from the crash, the crew is sitting in the tail

That design makes no sense at all, speaking from a design background. And I doubt very much if it would ever have got off the ground even with three low powered engines like it has.
Good luck mate!

If I was going to fly that candelabra I'd stipulate explosive bolts to separate me in the tail from the inevitable.

Oh and I vote Curtiss. Unless you want to save that for Porco Rosso II when it comes around

I've spoken to Lars at Khee Kha and he has recommended the Hobbycraft Otter floats as a suitable donor. So I'm off to look around eBay and my LHS to see what I can find. I've exchanged emails with Shane pope from Northwest Flying and he has sent me excellent photo's of the Beech in her livery and Lars has supplied numerous detail shots of how the floats are attached so I've got a good idea of how to proceed with the attachment to the Beech 18. I also have a home for the finished item as Shane has expressed a desire to have the model once complete. Now I have a question for everyone you used to be able to get strut material with an aerofoil shape from one of the various manufacturers but I forget whom. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find some? This will simplify the construction process for no end. I'll post pictures of the kit and parts once they are in my possession. Also I might have a chat with Mal from Mals miracle masks as I think they would be an excellent way of getting the livery painted and oh my word I'm going to attempt a NMF!

oh and while I think of it the B&V wont be that under powered as it has three 2 thousand horsepower BMW801D power eggs sitting at the business end. I agree though field of visibility would be nil!

Oh and I vote for the Curtiss as I want somebody else to deal with floats and rigging!
