Robert-----Beautiful work on the interior and engine of the Junkers D.1. Good looking camo scheme as well.

Regards, Ian

I worked some more on the "Super Fox" since it is a cold rainy Sunday. Got most of the sub-assemblies done and weathered. Also applied the Tamiya Smoke to the panel lines. Just have to add a wash to the wheel bays and then it will be Future Floor Wax time.

the decals don't seem to improve no matter how much Microsol I throw against it. And they were very fragile and I had several rip while applying them. Maybe I buy this kit again in the future to try my hand at it again.

The best way to get Roden decals to behave is to use just-boiled water. Boil some water, then dip a soft cloth into it and then press gently but firmly against the decal (don't let the cloth do any side-to-side motion, just straight on) for about 20 seconds. This softens Roden's nearly indestructible decal film and makes if conform to the surface.

Make sure to protect your fingers from the hot water

@ Ian
Thanks for the compliments. It is a pitty all that work does not really show anymore once the fuselage is buttoned up. That said. More then a layer of silver paint with some black oilpaint washes is all it is.

@ Richard
LOL... Well you can't get the armor out of my blood that easily. But I never guessed I would enjoy building aircraft that much.

@ Jessica
That is a sterling piece of advice. Sadly for this aircraft too late as I already laquered it. But I see myself building this kit again in the future and will try the hot water thing. Will the boiled water have any effect on the Pledge/Future? It is weird though with those Roden decals because the decals on my fokker D.VII behaved very well and became nice and thin after the microsol. Taking up the structure and details of the kit very good. But the decals of the D1 almost seemed of another make. Much stiffer decal film and they easily got ripped up.

Roden changed their decals a year or so ago so I suspect that your D.VII had the new ones. Roden's old decals are famous for being totally armour-plated. I dropped one right into a bottle of Solvaset and then plucked it out completely unharmed.

The hot water may take off the Future, but all that means is that you'd need to re-apply it. It should still be possible to treat your decals even now.

Hmmm so that could vary from kit to kit. Something to keep in mind on my following Roden kits. Tempting though it may sound I' not going to try my hand at the hot water technique on this D1. It is not a pricewinner but that does not matter to me. It is decent and with it being my third airplane I build that is good enough for me. But if I encounter any tough decals on my future Roden kits I will definately try it out.

Ian - The Skyhawks looking good and well used.
Robert - Your building yourself a nice collection of WW1 planes. I've been thinking of getting the Junkers myself. I have a set of aftermarket decals at the ready when I do.

As my Camel is now ready for paint I've been looking around for a nice scheme to finish it in. This is what I'm thinking of, its a nice simple scheme:

from: http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/117/9/2
The pictures caption claims that its from 6sqn RAF 1918, but as far as I've been able to tell they never operated Camels! Perhaps they mean RNAS 6 sqn?

It's easiest to assume that any given Roden kit will have horrid decals unless you know for certain that it was released within the last two years. When you open the box the clue to look for is whether or not the decals are glossy on the decal sheet. If they look matte they're the old ones.

Yeah slowly the hangar gets filled. Thanks for the compliments. I think Aftemarket decals are definately worth it. The kits decals are as you can read not all that good. I'm still not yet at that stage of knowledge. Even if I wanted AM stuff for those aircraft I wouldn't know where to start looking for them. It is kinda weird. Name any tank and I can tell you what is available and where to get it. But with aircraft I feel like starting all over again in the hobby.

@ Jessica
Thanks for that bit of info. I will keep an eye out for them.

The Junkers is finished. I still have to make the final pictures. I'm not really standing behind what I have taken so far. The dark colors and the Satin gloss coat really make taking good pictures hard. Still I had another photoshop idea in my mind and managed to take 3 pictures that were good enough. Grabbed some stock pics from Deviantart and started Photoshopping. And here is the result.

As said. The final pics come soon.

With friendly greetz

I have to admit... this A-model Su-15 TM is one of the worst kits I've worked on... After this I'm going to find a proper Su-15 to build (1:72 or 1:48) ..
I have a lot on the bench, but working on this kit makes me wonder "Why sell / make such a poor kit ? "...
I want to see another Game of Thrones Ep or a review a Dexter Season... not build another A-model kit ( I still have 4 or 5 in stash)

The photos

Near the Red circle, well to put simply, if it would fit properly you will end with a 3/4 mm gap between the fuselage halves.

The green circle.. the wheel bay is built with cockpit/seats, so to make it fit between the fuselage you have to find a simple solution:
either the pilot/seat or the wheel bay are aligned correctly not both...

Ladies and gentlemen,

I know this is the second time in a row but I think I'll withdraw my build from this campaign (to move it under another one). I'll find something else to build for this campaign, probably the Ju 87B-2 from Italeri that I just got my hands on. This will let me complete two separate campaigns and force me to build another model, something I really should as the workbench has really stalled since the beginning of the year. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I nearly bought that kit once. Glad I didn't now. Your doing well to stick with it this far. Are the kits weapons useable or just as bad?

@ Yalym
Cool pick that Mustang. How are the aircraft kits from Academy? Looking forward to the end result.

@ vdejarnette
Yeah the 1:72 D1 is a really nice kit. Easy to built with no nasty surprises bar the decals. Guaranteed to have some fun hours at the workbench.

@ John
Wow... you have some work at hands there mate. That really is some bad fit among the parts. Bring out the filler. Looking forward to the endresult.

A-model kits are really vaguely aircraft-shaped lumps we use to practise our building and finishing skills on. They're crude because the feeling of triumphing against one is so great : )

@Stephen

I took some photos of the weapons sprues...

Side 1

Side 2

I think the best are the decals.

@Ian

The hard thing is that when I start working on that build.. I control myself not to trash it.
I'm guessing the last month of the Campaign I'll spend it filling & sanding.
I still have time to change this build and start a true model kit, not an amount of white platic thrown into a box with a vague black & white photocopy and a decal sheet.

@Robert

I know... I'm looking forward to see how this will end... either a really poor Su-15 build or a great pile of white russian plastic..

@Jessica

I managed to get some decent pictures of my D1 this evening and without further ado. Here they are.

Hopefully the 4 kits I ordered at Roden will arrive soon. I ran out of aircraft.
