Nothing like a challenge, eh Bob?

I had a similar response to an AMT 1/48 B-26. The half built carcass is in a box somewhere. I heard a runor that the B-26 was a reboxing of an Aurora kit after their demise. I wonder if the same happened to the P-36.

Mark, I do not think the P-36 is an old Aurora mold. I may be wrong but the assembly process is not like theirs. Hey! pull out that old dinosaur and lets play with it to see what can be done.

The original carton died years ago. I still have the decal (all of the art is under one carrier film) and the instructions. The rest went into a plastic box before I left Eden Prairie 10 years ago and has only been seen once or twice since then.

Fuselage fit was OK, but they had ejector pins in the windows? The engine only had 7 cylinders per row (R-2800 was supposed to have 9). The nacelles didn't fit worth a darn and I managed to sand ruts into the wing trying to smooth them out. IIRC I added ~ 3 oz to the fuselage to try and get it to sit on the nose gear. But I never got the wings attached to the fuselage.

So, first colours are on the underside, Neutral Grey and Light Blue FS 35622. Tomorrow follows Olive Drab for the India-Warhawk ....

@Mark
You're right, furniture glue is this thick white water based glue which dries clear. We already had this matter in the Twin Boom Campaign

Happy modelling!

The P-36 had the 14 cylinder twin row R-1830 engine not the R-2800

@ Torsten: I do not know which scheme I like better, neutral grey or azure blue? Looks good.

@MarkH,

Sorry, that might have been confusing, I was referig to the B-26 which did have the R-2800. AMT/Aurora had put a 14 cylincer in its place.

All major components are glued together and the painting is done ....

... here comes the 89. FS Warhawk in OD/NG, the paint is from Revell

... and here is the 45. FS Warhawk in Light Blue and Italian Sand, paint is from Agama. I've looked around quite a lot for the right colour and found it surprisingly at the paint shop of the Regia Aeronautica and not in the USAAF store

In the meantime Future is already on and so both warbirds are finally waiting for the decals and some last bits and pieces, but not today, because today is party time.

Sorry Diego,but I have to be a bit
Germany - Argentina 4:0 How great is that? All people back here in Germany are proud of you guys down there in SA! Welcome semi final, welcome Spain! Now the dream final comes closer and closer: Germany - Netherlands.

Happy modelling

Great campaign, I always liked the P-40, especially the RAF version & less the flying tigers version

I think I'm in (I don't have any p-40 in my stash )

Nick, You've got till next March to get a kit. Check out this thread near the bottom for a spreadsheet of P-40 kits, details and decals.

I'll try to build as many P-40 as I can (even if it is one )
because this aircraft is one of my favorites

I've got plenty of time to pick up a couple of kits for the campaign & to finish my superdetailed 1/32 airacobra, so...

My practice build is dragging along. Got the stabilizers glued on last week, even started to fill the gaps, then the honeydo swamp caught me....

Since it's 1/72 then you can't see all the rivets I sanded off trying to get the seam smooth

So guys, my "pre-campaign" work is done since Wednesday evening and my Warhawks are ready for Take Off I took the pics this morning on my kitchen table ....

.... let's first walk around this light tanned P-40 N. It's that great 1:48 Hasegawa kit (add glue and shake ). This kit sees filler just in the very far distance, means, it's not needed here ....

.... the colours I used come from Agama. For the underside I took Light Blue FS 35622, for the upperside I took Italian Sand, as the suggested Tan looked too dark for me. For reference I used the b/w photos in my Osprey book ....

..... the original aircraft "Geronimo" was part of the 45th FS based on Nanumes Island in late 1943. As the 15th FG was stationed on coral islands throughout the Southwest Pacific, their aircrafts needed a different camouflage than usual to blend with the surroundings. I think my chosen colours fit quite well ....

.... in Osprey's book I saw photos of Warhawks wearing a belly tank (probably in OD?) plus 2 underwing bombs. Unfortunatly Hasegawa gives only the option of a belly tank or a belly bomb. So I plundered that cruel old AMT/Italeri P-40 kit which has underwing bombs and used them here. This is the only modification I gave the kit which is apart from that built oob and not weathered. All decals are from the box. Hope you like it ....

Now let's hop over to the CBI and pay our attention to this beauty. It's the same Hasegawa kit ....

.... the colours I used here are Revell's Aqua No. 43 and 46 for Neutral Grey and Olive Drab plus No. 36 for the spinner ....

.... the original "Lulu Belle" was part of the 89th FS and based in India in 1944. The 80 FG was famous for its various skull paintings on the cowlings. There are some fantastic flightline photos in books and no skull looks like the other ....

.... here I took the belly bomb from the kit as the 89th FS flew often fighter-bomber missions. The stencils and the star and bar are from the kit, all other decals come from that great P-40 set from Sky Models. Hope you like it .....

.... this is the pilot of "Lulu Belle", 1Lt. Phil Adair ....

.... a Warhawk anyone? This sixpack looks a bit like a "Defence Circle", right? Now, don't let Hans-Joachim Marseille see this, as we all know he "loved" the P-40 and surely watches us from cloud Yellow 14 ....

Before I forget, the bases are again from my friend mark58

Happy modelling!

Torsten, fantastic builds and finishes. I like the tool that you use to hold the a/c, how did you construct it or was it purchased? Again great job on the P-40's and the paint/camo.

Beautiful work Torsten! I can't see a single seam line or paint blemish anywhere on either plane. You do some really professional work my friend. Nice and clean P-40's in great paint schemes.
BRAVO!

Thanks for your kind words, guys!

@Bob
This frame is made of an old wire clothes hanger that you normally get in a laundrette. The other stuff you get in a hobby shop. I painted it in Interior Green and this frame has already seen many of my kits not even half finished ....

@Hermon
Well, this is probably the best 1:48 kit you can get of a P-40. Every part fits very well and there is not much sanding to do. The folks at Hasegawa did a very good job with this kit. The only minor problem is the fitting of the canopy. But with a little patience the result is also fine. Unfortunatly Hasegawa offers only the E- and N-Version in their program. I would like to see other types, especially I would love to build a P-40 F or L with this Packard Merlin engine. like the Americans flew in the MTO. But that we can rarely get only the old AMT/Ertl kit which is quite expensive ....

Happy modelling
Torsten

PS. There are some small seams to be seen, Hermon, but I won't tell you where .....
